While I'm no fan of the right wing Putin regime in Russia, it should be noted that one of the guarantees the USA offered to the USSR (mainly Russia) 30 years ago was that NATO would never encroach into the Republics. The Eastern Bloc was OK, but not the actual Republics in the former USSR. Russia sees the Ukraine as a red line (as well as Georgia). It would be like Mexico joining the old Warsaw Pact during the Cold War, it would be completely unacceptable to US hegemony. We need to consider that here.
