Bruce opens his eyes in the bed of Arkham Asylum, where Alfred tells him that he was just a mental patient locked up for murdering his own parents. His secret identity as Batman was merely a hallucination, and his so-called villains are actually staff members trying to help him.
Bruce refuses to believe that his entire life is an illusion, despite the proof presented to him. When Alfred visits him again and presents him with his so-called Batsuit, Bruce tries to escape wearing it. He is soon cornered by some staff members, but Alfred calls them off and finally decides to tell Bruce the truth: that he was right and the whole place is just a setup, built to save him from the outside world. Bruce then leaves the asylum, only to find that the entire world has descended into chaos. Later Bruce discovers that Lex Luthor has turned the people against the superheroes and the government, seizing control for himself. Meanwhile, a mysterious being named Omega, who has obtained the Anti-Life Equation, attacks and devastates most of the world.
