My Father's Work Review: An Ethically Dubious Scientist Simulator

My Father's Work is the new App driven game from publisher Renegade Studios (1-4 players) about becoming the best mad scientist of all! Incredibly humorous with solid core mechanisms, this is a game we really enjoyed. You'll play through an engaging worker placement narrative story, with th players impacting how the story turns out. Even better is that it comes with 3 different scenarios, and each playthrough of the same scenario can shake out quite different based on the player's choices.

Great review. I love the game! The text is long but I find the Victorian slant not so grating probably as I’m English and have a degree in history so I’m used to the prose. I do think that the best way to play is to ignore the super competitive approach and follow the narrative and have fun. Whatever the case I do hope they innovate it further and a TLDR version sounds like a great idea for those who want it. One minor observation you said restoration games (5:58) rather than renegade at one point 😀

Couldn't agree more with all that you said! Especially the Issues with the scenario + ALL THAT TEXT

Doggos steal the show at the end. Love it!

Great video and review. Happy to be a subscriber. Audio seems a little echoing compared to past videos but I’m sure you’ll work it out 👍

Your reviews are so good, I'm amazed everyone doesn't subscribe immediately. I'd have liked a sample of the app's prose because I actually really like flowery Victorian prose, but suspect theirs was just bad? But perhaps there would be problems with quoting it

We had a lot of the same issues as you with text and the app.

Great review, I quite enjoy the prose. But I really like your point about the masterwork being distracting from the narrative elements. Thats so true. Why would I go to a apace I dont need in order to interactive with something completely unknown when I have to focus my actions on inching towards the masterwork? Players tended to ignore the story tokens.

As always, great review. However, my question is - is this available and/or where can I get it?

Probably the first board game review I have seen that had face licking in it 🤔

Great vid. This game is fun despite the game of thrones length novel 😂

I have had the game for a while and it remains unplayed. I was anticipating the game a lot, but the narration in the app was so bad it sounded like they had the intern read through the minimal text that they used in their voice over. For me it over promised and under delivered.

Is this a pimped up version or is this the actual base version?

I found the text absolutely insufferable. Just like you, I don't mind the amount of text, but it was like their head was constantly stuck in a thesaurus. It took so much away from the flow of actual narrative. I'm well read, but I had to look up so many words that just didn't add anything to the narrative or the theme, and the simpler terms would have actally painted a better picture of the story/period rather than taking away from it.
