This is nice but I recommend a can opener that cuts from the side. They work better in my opinion and have a much cleaner cut.

What helps also is picking up the bottom edge of the can, opposite the blade, pretty much tilting it

They way I used to get it back on track while working the prep line in college was to spin it back a bit then go forward again. And eventually learned that a slower pace is less likely to strip the can.

I would assist the spin of the can with my other hand slowly. It worked sometimes, the gear on those openers get a little worn over the years.

As a brazilian, we normally use a can opener that is akin to P-38, i don't know the name of such type (search "Abridor de lata" and you are going to see what we use).
It never failed me and it is as practical... Lol... And they stand for years, i mean, my grandmah have one since i was kid in the 90's...

My old place of work had one of these attached to the crummiest table I've ever had the displeasure to prep on. The can opener would shake the damn thing so much.
