Bosch has implemented loads of new security technology with their Smart System, one of which is their new digital key function you can use to unlock your ebike.

What do you think of this new tech?

One simple security tool, on motorcycles for time: locking fork, so even if you want to walk it away, you go in circles. Get with it, guys!

Sounds like a situation where you have to buy a bike with the lock integrated into the bike frame? Fine for new but limited for existing.

There's also the New York Way: Multiple locks for every stealable part plus an alarm.

I'd certainly pay extra for that feature to be in my bike, so long as its reliable and if equipt with a "find my phone" like feature police actually take it seriously as a locator to where your bike is. Locally I seen a story 1 man ripped off several mac from work, the owner tracked it right to the house and police said it wasnt enough proof the computers were actually there so did nothing.

I’m concerned with dudes picking up my motorcycle and loading it onto a truck. Doesn’t matter how many locks it’s got, they’ve got someone that can get through them. All they’ve gotta do is pick it up and take it to them. But yeah I like the concept it might stop kids from stealing them.

I like the idea of a detachable display that is also a key

Seemingly BOTH phone AND an on-bike digital type-in would be best (optional either/or availability). Use either one, but the other is always a backup to the first chosen option!

In spite of not being a cell phone gadget kind of guy, I've got an e-bike with code access if I want to use that, which I don't because it's a whole extra step slowing me down, but I simply put a lot more stock into heavy and thick locks to secure my bikes, two of which are not computerized anyway.

Your video made me realise how out of kilter I am. I have an iPhone but had no idea what you said about bricks and Bosch. And the featured bicycle isn’t like any machine I’m going to own. The good news for me I suppose is that your shiny digital gizmos will take the potential thief’s attention away from my handraulic leg-powered device fixed with a couple of chunky u-locks.

The Nyon display does this already, I believe? Though you do have to remove it and take it with you to lock the bike.

This will never work if the bike can still be parted or ridden unpowered

Which bike is she riding in this clip?

Vanmoof does this extremely well. I wish other companies would adopt that type of security and GPS tracking.

Theft resistance is the main good that connectivity will bring. Stromer bicycles already have this feature and can be shut down and located, making stealing them a losing proposition.

Unfortunately, up here in the cold and slow north, Transport Canada finally realized that these beautiful speedbikes, which everyone had set up to perform as intended, could be retarded and limited to 20 mph, the top legal speed in Canada, with an over-air signal that Stromer was required to send from headquarters in Switzerland to every one of their bikes registered to a Canadian address. Last November. No appeal. No remedy. At the appointed hour the very pricy bikes were reduced to costly boat anchors. Hub motors can't be chipped. When connected, you will never again truly own your bike, so beware.
