Watch Tyler Smyth mix the drums in "Cutthroat" by Blessthefall in this clip from his Nail The Mix session.

He uses a variety of EQ, compression, saturation and other plugins from Universal Audio, Waves, Drumforge, Wavesfactory and Slate Digital in Cubase.

NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, Of Mice & Men, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.

Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Meshuggah, Periphery, Papa Roach, Machine Head, Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember and more - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!

So snare sidechain comp with the kick on metal music...I've always doubt if I should do this when I have double bass along big snares hits. I've always struggled with these mid tempo double bass kick and big snares. Should you recommend to give a try guys? What kind of compression do you recomand ?

+1 on the Legacy 1176. I've used old and new hardware and I think they've overcooked the distortion on the new units and the plugins are too fuzzy. Same with Waves. It's like they are modeling broken hardware.

Does URM ever do tutorials with real drums...?

Once more instruments are added to the mix, drums might need a little bit more tweaking

No offense to anyone involved in this but I find these drums very dull, which is odd because everything is triggered. Seems like Tyler is chasing around his signal chains on his channels when it probably would make more sense to look at the busses and what processing you can do there.
