US president-elect Donald Trump has put forward his pick to negotiate peace in Ukraine. Keith Kellogg is a retired lieutenant-general who was a national security adviser during the first Trump administration. He's expected to play a crucial role in achieving Trump's stated aim of ending the war - that began after Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor in 2022.

For more on this, we talk to Gustav Gressel. He is a Russia expert focusing on military and defense policy at the Austrian National Defence Academy.

And we talk to military analyst and senior lecturer in War Studies at Portsmouth University, Frank Ledwidge.

A previous agreement when the nukes that were in Ukraine was supposed to maintain the borders. Russia & the U.S. both failed to uphold their previous security guarantees. Why would anyone expect anything different now?

I don't like Trump at all, and I also think this is a positive pick, HOWEVER, European security should be in the hands of Europe, not a third party. European peace of mind should not rely on a few swing states thousands of miles away. It's time for Europe to step it up.

The land is one thing. But what about the children taken from Ukraine and brought to Russia. This cannot be lost.

Does any sane human being really think that Putin would honor ANY agreement?

That's not a plan. That's an insult to every Ukrainian that died at the hand of putin.

Long-term stability – a guarantee of peace for Ukraine – is paramount. Poland and Finland fear that they are next in this war of aggression and expansion.

They honestly completely effed this up. It’s very sad to see.

Cornflakes and fluffing? We in Europe should get our act together, and not depend on the US. EU should be the central block for European defense as a part of NATO. USA should be suspended from NATO under pro-Russia Musk and TRUMP. Peace with Russia would be positive, followed by Russian regime's change from within. However Ukraine sets their terms as they have been invaded. Give Ukraine membership in the EU, then NATO.

Europe would benefit from future cooperation with a democratic Russia rather than dependency on the US.

We all know that putin would be delighted to freeze the lines where they are. So this deal would only hurt ukraine and reward russia

If only the US had not convinced Ukraine to abandon their nuclear weapons and give them hollow security assurances. If there is one key takeaway it is this: Words are wind. if you live near Russia you need nuclear deterrent forces to maintain your independence. The strong do what they will and the weak suffer what they must.

There is no way that Ukraine is getting the territory Russia has taken back

Not a peace plan, it’s a pause button for Putin. Pathetic.

I wonder if Trump would be so willing to give up US territory peace at all costs.
