The Cold Hard Truth- George Jones (& Lyrics)

You don't know who I am
But I know all about you
I've come to talk to you tonight
About the things I've seen you do

I've come to set the record straight
I've come to shine the light on you
Let me introduce myself
I'm the cold hard truth

There is a woman we both know
I think you know the one I mean
She gave her heart and soul to you
You gave her only broken dreams

You say you're not the one to blame
For all the heartaches she's been though
I say you're nothing but a liar
And I'm the cold hard truth.

All your life that's how it's been
Lookin' out for number one
Takin' more than you give
Movin' on when you're done.

With her you could have had it all
A family and love to last
If you had any sense at all
You'd go and beg her to come back.

Instrumental

You think that you're a real man
But you're nothing but a fool
The way you run away from love
The way you try to play it cool

I'm gonna say this just one time
Time is running out on you
You best remember me my friend
I am the cold hard truth.

You best remember me my friend
I am the cold hard truth..

Song featured on an episode of Crossing Jordan. R.I.P George Jones 1931-2013

This song is a masterpiece of someone arriving at a moment of painful awareness of themselves. and Jones is the perfect singer for that, both in vocal ability, his ability to express the emotion of a song, and the less than perfect way he had lived his life.
I think that he meant this song as a warning to others not to follow his example.
You can't help but like him, which is maybe why it took him so long to see the cold hard truth.

this song is exactly why country music saved my life. I don't know where I'd be if I never heard George Jones. I was a person who had no one to shape me or guide me, all I knew was how to react. I was like a train barreling at high speed with no conductor, and then thank god around 20 years old, about 25 years ago, I listened to this man, really listened, alone and closely, and its like he knelt right down to my level, eye to eye, and with all the pain in his voice he sang exactly to me where I was, and turned my rage into what it really was all along: despair and hopelessness. He had been exactly where I was and had found a way to turn it into something beautiful and transcendent. And so he offered me hope, something I never had. It was through him that I connected to country music as a whole, and country music sang me back to shore. It took all of them. These songs became my guides, even when I slipped up into simply reacting, they'd sing me back down, help me repair any damage or hurt feelings I'd caused, and the shame I'd feel. this song in particular. So many times I was ready to run away and this song turned me around.
I know so many things go into taking a miserable life and making it wonderful, but when I think about my life I'm not confused at all about who to thank for the chance at grace. George Jones and Jesus.
