🤦At the end of the day, we both want ponds, I just wish we could come to some sort of agreement on where we put them.

The dynamic between beavers and crawfish farmers is a complex environmental challenge. Beavers, naturally inclined to build dams, inadvertently disrupt the water levels in crawfish ponds, crucial for optimal farming conditions. This results in a continuous struggle for farmers, who must adapt to these changes to protect their crawfish yield and maintain the health of their farms. Balancing the instinctual behavior of beavers with the economic realities of crawfish farming highlights the intricate relationship between wildlife management and agricultural sustainability.

What are your solutions?

In canada they install drain pipes with a shut off valve .when the pond gets to big they drain the pond down. The water flows under water making no noise and the neavers have no clue the levels are dropping

Beavers are so smart. Amazing how their instincts tell them to literally create bodies of water

We have 11 ponds on our farm and adopted a litter of Otter Hounds. The 5 of them keep our ponds pest free, especially during rice season.

Love them or hate them. One of the most important keystone species. If they go everything else goes and they might include the crawfish.

Here in Switzerland they let them build the dams and afterwards pop pipes through them. So the water gets a little higher the bever is happy and the land that shouldn't be flooded is aswell fine.

I live off grid and near a creek. Beavers are upstream of my cabin. I use a hydro-electric generator that needs a good flow of water to charge batteries and power my cabin and saw mill.
It took me a day, but I dug down deep enough to insert a 10 inch PVC pipe and I haven't had a problem for a year since that pipe was installed.
The Beaver's I believe tried to figure out why the water was dropping but never figured it out.

Beavers go to the sound of running water and pile sticks on it. Get a sturdy speaker, set it up away from your pond, and play the sound of a babbling brook - the beavers may get distracted. Or manage your water so it flows quietly.

Dig out the dam as far down as you can. Then put a PVC pipe in at least 6" diameter under the water line. If need to do it where the beaver does not see the pipe.
When the beaver comes back to fix the dam the water will still flow through the pipe.
Just make absolutely sure the pipe is deep enough and at least 10 to 20 feet from the dam. In the pond area. Make sure to put bolts at the end also to stop any sticks to be jammed.

I can show you pictures how to stop them using PVC pipe.

My grandpa has this thing that he puts in a stick near it and it’s a motion sensor device that will start flashing strobe, red and white light and play loud. Sounds that sound like gunshots and barking dogs and the beavers have stayed away for the longest time. It works really well for my grandpa.

We had a similar situation growing up dealing with beavers. We found the best solution for our purposes was some corrugated plastic piping with some 5.56 rounds through it. Any round will work honestly. Keeps the water flowing even if the beavers try to dam it up with stick and mud. Hope this helps.

They don't gnaw to access the inner bark, they chew as high as they can reach eating the cambium layer of the bark. It's the only nutritional part of the tree for them. When they can't reach any higher they chew it down and strip the whole tree. Teeth are orange from naturally occuring iron in them. They rust. Lol

Tannerite fixes those beaver dams and huts quite well 😂

Fun fact land beavers build dams on are vastly less susceptible to fires. In Ontario a group of beavers found a young boy in the woods at night and they saved his life.

Maybe it would be a good solution to set up a loud speaker that plays a predator call every hour in the areas that they keep trying to dam up. I know it works with pigeons and seagulls at grain elevators on the coast. You could even use a solar panel to power it.
