The Touareg used to be all about smooth touring with a diesel engine. But that’s all changed with the hybrid V6 drivetrain that has trickled down from nameplates like Bentayga and Cayenne. Is it any good? Paul Maric finds out.

One of the best suspension performances I’ve seen on the channel.

Have been holding off buying a new Tiguan R as I knew a new Toureg R was coming. I don't have the facility (or the urge) to buy any sort of electric/semi electric car but i have been curious about the latest Toureg R. This review told me everything I needed to know and I'm now happy to save the 50 grand and go with the Tiggy R. The design may be a few years old and is about to be phased out - but that's fine by me. It goes like the clappers and sticks to the road like the proverbial to a blanket. I reckon there'll be run-out sales as well before the end of the year. Thanks Paul, another great video.

Lol I love how Paul pronounces “Touareg” in several different ways in this video.

Really enjoyed this review Paul, nice job!
Beautiful looking car, the only thing I’d personally like is the V6 TD. I currently own a Launch edition 2019 Touareg and it’s so impressive in its economy, power and torque. The way these big SUVs handle is bloody impressive, especially at 2500 odd kgs. Almost zero body roll and the way they hold the body flat throughout the twisties is downright impressive. The comfort of air suspension is such a luxury too.
Although this R is out of my price range I’d definitely purchase one if I could afford it. The lapitz blue is a stunning colour too.

AUD $ 130, 000 and who would worry about petrol price, if you could spent that on a car. But mind you, 2, 500 Kg is huge and can chew your fuel purely due to the weight.

I can just see someone coming up to the owner and saying “I like your new Golf”!!

Just FYI, the towball down load limit on the R is 220kg (compared to 280kg on the diesel) so that will change the payload amount you mentioned

I don’t like the fact it has no spare wheel - limits it’s appeal as long distance cruiser.

Looked at the R but it doesn't work with towball weight for us. So looking at the diesel R Line. Looking forward to a review on that for sure.

I’d be interested to see how this compares to the higher output diesel R Line, yes it’s not going to accelerate like the full “R” version but I’d be keen to hear wether there’s much of a downgrade in the handling/ride. I’d sacrifice the extra power and a teeny bit of handling for less initial outlay and cheaper running costs because the hi-po diesel is quick enough for me in outright get up and go.

Off road it please!

Interested to see how good it can handle your track, is the traction system as good as it used to be.

Can we have a review on diesel r-line as well? The r-line version has extra 4 wheel steer and active sway bar and curious to see if there have any differences.

Any chance of quoting ground clearance when you test any SUV. I am one of those rare people that actually takes these vehicles on unsealed roads and also does a bit of light off roading. The ground clearance is one of those specs that is usually difficult to find but it is important to me. I must admit, that tyre profile is a bit concerning for unsealed road use.

If looking at this as a tow vehicle, the towball weight is significantly compromised on all toureags which is an absolute shame because it would be a towing weapon.
