I was on my balcony watching this video and of course when you said "the velvet worm doesn't just spray its slime straight outwards, the high pressure power of its squirt combined with the elasticity of its oral papillae turn these openings into the equivalent of two out of control fire hoses", someone walked by and gave me a weird look 😆.

Fun Fact: Velvet Worms are closely related to/descended from one of the goofiest Cambrian age animals: the Hallucigenia. This makes them easier to love.

My brother and I once found one of these when we were kids. Never found one again, but they're definitely out there in the forests of Tasmania amid the leaflitter. The one we found was small, maybe only 3cm long at most and in a slightly purple-tinged gunmetal/black tone. It slimed my brother's hands and it stuck like pine tar for quite some time. We were thrilled by it, having only heard of them in a nature doco barely a month or two earlier. Held it for a few minutes and then let it return to the leaflitter as the evening slipped into twilight.

One cool feature of them is those little legs. They're all hydraulic like the sucker feet on echinoderms like starfish, moved by pushing fluids into the 'leg' rather than internal musculature.
