Those surge protector connected device warranties are a joke. I took the time to read the claims process on each of the major manufacturers sites and the process basically ensures a claim will be denied.

Glad I watched this, and read comments. From now on will be better at unplugging when storms are coming, and when I'm away.

If surge protectors should be replaced every 6 or 12 months, then should UPS units that include surge protection also be replaced as frequently to maintain full surge protection capability? I've heard that the battery inside them can take the hit of surges, but I'm unsure. What do you think?

Replacing every 6 months or a year is insane. They last longer than that

A surge protector is not a lightning arrester.

I think surge protectors are not designed to take lightning strikes but just normal surges that can happen from power fluctuations so best to unplug all things you dont to not risk

Lighting will kill anything regardless of what piece of mind you have hooked to a socket. If you like it unplug it during storms and when gone for more than a day.

Best protection is to unplug everything out of the outlets during a thunder storm. A lightning struck out house - burned our computer out and wifi modem. They were off and plugged into a surge protector. If you're not home - hope your house doesn't get hit.

Nothing is guaranteed, I have a $7 surge protector on my computer. Maybe it will work, maybe it won’t but it’s worth $7 for the chance it might. I’ve paid more for losing lottery tickets.

I purchased a new surge protector today for my modem, Airport base station, printer and linux based media server. I used to have a nice APC UPS several years ago with a line conditioner, that got destroyed when the transformer out back malfunctioned and pumped 220 into the apartments instead of 110. I never bothered to replace it because laptops already have a battery in them so they don't shut off in power failure, i just surge protect it.

My question for non computer devices in the US is a good surge protector enough, short of turning them off before a storm hits?

The protector I got is a GE with 10 plugs 2 usb ports for charging, a ground and protection light that show conditions are good. It also has a built in circuit breaker, and auto shutdown technology. I know a lot of it is marketing speak I just thought for what it's going to be used for it will be enough. The Media server I usually leave off unless i need to use it.

Any just curious what people might have to say. Good video

I have been using a small 1970s generator during power outages to run the freezer but mew freezers are being equipped with digital devices that can be sensitive to low hurts or low voltage.
Don't want to invest in newer inverter generators looking for a low hurts protection can hook inline from generator.
Not much info theres units for RV power supplies but they are not meant for generators any suggestions or places I can look would be appreciated👍

geez people, no educational background here nor science. Surge protectors last from 1-3 years depending on how wavy is your current in your outlets. Surge protectors do not save from lightning strikes. Surge protector extends your electric electronic equipment life while emitting the small to big fluctuations on your current in your house. lets say you turn on the iron or wife turned on the hair curling machine, you may see the lights may fluctuate, thats the surge caused by the other electrical devices. hair dryer, AC Condenser or soldering iron kicks in and creates a drop or jump on the current in the household, surge protector emits those jumps and drops and provides a clear and stabilized power current to your devices. Trust me, I am an engineer with double major!

They really should include a simple replaceable hot line fuse on a lot of them.

I have whole house protection at the circuit breaker panel for starters.

Joule rating is not an official UL performance specification. Series Mode Filters used in surge protection do not wear out. They do not need to be replaced. You do not normally need a power conditioner in the US. US power is pretty darn consistent. Switch Mode Power Supplies usually have a large voltage tolerance (100 Volts to 240 Volts) so no voltage condition is normally needed.

$800 for a "power conditioner"? Afterwards it's sent to your pc's SMPS, Switched Mode Power Supply (aka BUZZ SAW!)... to be used by the various components - "Face Palm"

Isobar is probably the best you can buy and I have seen one of those after a near lightning strike that caught on fire and had a hole melted in the side. I can only imagine the damage that would have been done if the device wasnt in circuit. At best these will offer a layer of protection. One thing to alway think about is that lightning travels a mile through the air. How big is your surge protector? 12 inches, maybe less. Don’t trust one of these to completely protect you. The best thing to do is unplug the device, and that includes dsl and your cable when there is a bad storm. I’ve opened up lots of computers over the years that were charred black on the inside from lightning coming in through the ethernet connecton also. Electricity loves to travel down a wire. Isolating the device is the only real protection. If there thas been any electrical damage to your electronics and its now working due to repairs. You can expect other parts to fail in the near future. Theres always hidden damage waiting to show its self. Don’t expect your computer to be as reliable after you’ve had a lightning strike. The parts may continue to work but they will be significantly degraded. Backup your data.

just go for medical grade or factory grade type of power surge will solve the problem.

Great but does power conditioner protect a high-end MOSFET stereo amplifier from short black outs??....I had a good strip but it did not do the job. After black out the amp was still working but with lower dynamic and bus attack - this was gone for ever...so black outs - outage - do damage something in the amp if it is on when black out somebody explain me what kind of transients are involved in short black outs???.do I need only good power conditioner or UPS is a must??...of course as pure sine wave in battery mode
