Archaeologists Find 400 Vessels Containing Human Ashes

A crypt in the ancient Mayan city of Tonina, in modern-day southeastern Mexico, was rediscovered in 2020. In it, archaeologists found 400 vessels containing human ashes. Mixed in were roots and rubber which historians think may inform us about what these Mayans believed happened after death. Juan Yadeun, an archaeologist on the site, believes important people in the community were turned into balls used in sports after their death.

Were they supposed to be "balls" or spheres - ala like the Sun, the Moon, etc? Or if they were enemies, maybe they literally wanted to kick them around some more after they were dead. Either way, if we start doing that, I wanna be turned into one of those stripey beach balls. Maybe with light up LEDs. I want to look festive in the afterlife.

I recall reading (or possibly learned in art history class) that one of the ancient South American cultures (Mayan or Incan) would use the severed heads of enemies in a kind of basketball game where the object was to pass the head through a stone "hoop". The courts with the stone "hoops" have been excavated.
