When Tatsuo Horiuchi retired, he decided to try his hand at art. But instead of spending money on paints and brushes, Horiuchi used what he already had pre-installed on his computer—Microsoft Excel. Now, the 77-year-old artist is creating remarkably intricate digital masterpieces of the Japanese landscape, all on the free graphing software.

It takes a special person to look at microsoft excel and think "I can make a painting with that."

This guy isn't lying on his resume about his proficiency with Excel.

Anyone else initially think he was coloring millions of cells individually?

This to me is a true artist. Using something so unconventional to create incredibly beautiful works. He's a master

Artists lives are hard… so much talent and value with barely any recognition. These works should be selling !

isnt excel mostly vectors or something? so technically he can upscale his art to very large frames without much quality loss at all

The coolest thing about this to me is that he decided that he wanted to make something good in 10 years, (which as a college student) it feels so wildly far into the future for me that I could not imagine knowing I can dedicate 10 years to something like that. It's really awesome to see that this guy is confident in his position and knows that he'll have the time to work on this.

These "paintings" are actually stunning. There's something about the limitations of excel that give these images a retro feel close up, but the colors and composition are honestly breathtakingly creative.

Why hasn't Microsoft bought all of these and made a commercial? Or added them as Windows wallpapers?

I thought he would be filling in tiny cells with color.
I wasn't expecting that he was using the drawing tools.
So interesting to watch this guy do a deep dive into a seldom-used accessory.

As an Indie Filmmaker I appreciate people like him, it's really hard and you have to be really witty to express your ideas on a budget.
