Ekatarina Velika  (abbreviated  EKV ) was  a rock  group from  Belgrade  and one of the most successful and influential groups in the former Yugoslavia.

The core of the band was guitarist and singer Milan Mladenović , keyboardist Margita Stefanović and bassist Bojan Pečar .

Belgrade) and the broadcasting of videos on television, Ekaterina Velika is slowly gaining a larger number of fans.

In 1985, the group released the second album Ekatarina Velika . The album was recorded in the SIM studio in Zagreb, with producer Vladimir Smolec, and it features Masimo Savić , at that time the singer of the Croatian band Dorian Gray , as well as Tomo In Der Mulen, guitarist of the band Karlovi Vari. The new material brought certain changes in the sound, since compared to the previous album, it was noticeably faster-paced and more energetic. Nevertheless, the band's recognizable features are also present on it: deeply subtle tones as well as Mladenović's hermetic, introspective and metaphorical lyrics. The album's cover, which was conceived and designed by Dušan Gerzić, also showed certain artistic ambitions, as it shows the band members painted in the manner of Indian ritual tattoos.

The second edition brought the band its first real hits, the songs "Oči boje meda" , "Tattoo" and "Modro i zeleno" . On March 22, 1985, they played outside Yugoslavia for the first time, at the "Days of Culture" event in Turin, Italy, and left a positive impression. Another notable performance was performed at a concert in Zagreb, which was part of the so-called "Bolje vas nali" traditional exchange of bands between Belgrade and Zagreb. At the end of 1985, Fece went to do his mandatory military service, and his replacement on drums was Ivan "Raka" Ranković (previously: "Tvrdo srce i bige ushi").

copy of the album Ljubav . However, in contrast to the mostly fast rhythmic tempo combined with a slightly dark sound on the album Ljubav , Samo par godi for nas has much more sonically "muddy" melodies and a slower rhythm that together carry a premonition of the coming political and social tragedies that will engulf Yugoslavia in the early 90s. .

Several hits from the album include the songs "Krug" , "Srce" and "Par godina za nas" .

In November 2006, the song "Par godina za nas" was voted the best Yugoslav song of all time by the listeners of Belgrade radio B92. In his interview for the RTS TVB show "TV Poster" in 1992, Milan Mladenović stated that "Par godina za nas" is the best song that Ekaterina Velika made.
At the beginning of 1994, Catherine the Great was inactive. Mladenović goes to Brazil in the spring , where he works on the album "Angel's Breath" together with his friend and musician Mitra Subotic Sub and a group of Brazilian musicians . After his return to Belgrade, the band continues with concert activity and begins work on a new album, the working title of which is "Together Again" . However, work on the album was soon stopped due to Mladenović's health problems. In August 1994, the band played at the festival in Budva , which was their last concert performance. The next day, Milan Mladenović was transferred to the hospital where it was discovered that he had pancreatic cancer.

Only a few months later, on November 5, 1994, Milan Mladenović died in Belgrade at the age of 37. With his death, Catherine the Great ceased to exist.

Bojan Pečar died in London of a heart attack on October 13, 1998, at the age of 39.

Margita Stefanović died on September 18, 2002 in Belgrade, at the age of 44, from AIDS.

Other members of the band who passed away are Ivica Vdović (suffered from AIDS, died in 1992) and Dušan Dejanović (also suffered from AIDS, died on November 16, 2000 in Belgrade).
