UK suspends Hong Kong extradition treaty over China’s security law | DW News

On Monday, prominent pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong submitted his application to run for a seat in Hong Kong‘s legislature. Another of the Chinese-ruled city‘s most prominent young activists, Nathan Law, recently fled Hong Kong for London. The UK is set to suspend its extradition treaty with Hong Kong amid growing international condemnation of China’s new national security law in the territory. The controversial law punishes a broad range of offenses that fall under the umbrella of subversion, terrorism or collusion with foreign elements. That didn't stop pro-democracy activists from holding an unofficial primary election, hoping to come up with enough candidates to win a majority in the legislature later this year.

You hold China accountable. Great. Come home to Hongkong and show us. You talk big in London only.

Put himself high up in moral grounds & thinking too highly of himself with whatever cause he think he is fighting for others... living privilege lifestyle with wishful thinking .

They might manage to become martyrs but wishing for China to make HK autonomous again is foolish.

Western power condemnation to China, not world condemnation.

Nathan, Why are you not in USA? Please don’t bring trouble here in UK. Hong Kong is a better and peaceful place without you.

The funny is this guy was born in China not in Hong Kong. Everybody who breaks the law is in great danger. So first, do not break the law, then you can live without any fear of being prosecuted. He has chosen to betray his motherland and his own country. Time to pay the price.

What a peaceful weekend in Hong Kong!
Our deep gratitude for the two Laws: Mr Nathan Law and the National Security Law.
BTW, Mr Nathan Law, please stay in UK as long as possible, legally, illegally or whatever-ly.

This is an idiotic question, of course Joshua Wong will be DQ by the gate keeper (i.e. the electoral officer in charge of vetting candidates). Doesn't even have to use the National Security Law.

It's all lies. If he were in such great danger in Hk he wouldn't have been able to fly overseas at all. Moreover he couldn't have been "reminded" of the Hk colonial times for the simple reason that he was born in China and only came to Hk in 1999 when it was already handed back to China.

The Extradition Treaty benefits both parties. Not necessarily Hong Kong is the loser. After BREXIT, The UK is not really in a position of strength. There are only three major trading blocks in the world today. EU, US and China. After antagonizing the EU, is it wise for Britain to fight China?
