L take, teams don't go for it from 55+ yards unless absolutely desperate and kicking is still hard. Kicking the ball has been around longer than the forward pass, and kicking actually makes the games more interesting especially on clutch kicks

I think its more the fact that previously not many teams used their kickers to their full potential. At least not until David Acres set the 64 yard record with the ravens. Before then only a few teams utilized their kickers like that: Detroit lions with jason hanson and the New England Patriots with Adam Vinatieri. I know there are other team's but these are the biggest examples i can think of.
