Original title: De slag om de Schelde, by the director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.

After D-day, Nazi Germany had taken a defensive position and was losing power. While the tactical retreat continued on different fronts, the war continued with its final violence. On the tenth of August, Nazi Germany was victorious on the Eastern Front. There was still hope for the Nazis, and D-Day, for all its importance, was not conclusive after all. love these movies with different perspectives of the war. Big shout out to the British Canadian and Dutch effort.

The story of this glider was based on an actual event. It was the Horsa of glider pilot Sgt Black that landed after the towrope severed. He landed with a jeep and a few mixed personall and indeed a Dutch commando. They evaded capture for several weeks. They decided that splitting up in 3 groups of 2 might be wiser, and tried to escape with aid of the Dutch resistance. They were all captured.

This is one of the most terrifying ww2 clips I’ve ever seen. The realism really gets to me I can totally imagine the horror of being in the glinder and expecting death to be knocking at the door. The pilots screams is an amazing piece of acting. Really incredible.

It's unfortunate that we don't have enough working models to do real shots anymore. 1977 "a bridge too far" really is a one of a kind movie.

The actor that plays Will is so good. His screams are so passionate and believable

My father was a WWII paratrooper with 2 combat jumps (Normandy with the 82nd and Varsity with the 17th). He admired the courage of the glider riders and thought that it was a great injustice that hey didn't receive the same hazard pay as the paras (They eventually did). Told me once it seems he never saw an intact glider.

Couldn’t even imagine living through any part of that war.

Just young lads with more guts than one could ever imagine today. What men of valour they were. RIP all those who never came home. Thank you to all veterans for your service.

My great uncle took part in this

He fought his way back to allied lines and was not captured.

Never met him he died before I was born.

He's in the first Operation Market garden movie from the late 1940s

*Update* the film is called "Theirs is the glory"

Tommy Scullion. Oddly it says in the film he was captured he wasn't

I was almost in a plane crash, of course no one was shooting at us, but it was very terrifying. People were yelling and praying as the aircraft (a small commuter prop plane, with 20 souls onboard) was being tossed around in a thunderstorm with a lot of turbulence. I made peace with myself and only wanted it over quick & could hear the stall warning horn blaring; I work on airplanes and know what generally happens next. Amazingly the pilots recovered and we returned to Dallas Texas, where we’d departed. I hate to imagine the horror these young men were facing; flying a glider, being shot at, the turbulence and the sheer horror. These men were truly The Greatest Generation.

Can’t imagine what those fleets would’ve looked liked irl. I dont think movies can capture how grand and terrifying it mustve been (For both sides) to see all those planes in the air simultaneously.

Grandpa was in one of those, thank you grandpa.
His glider was pretty much blown in half, his first war injury was another mans femur blowing into his legs.
He came to in a tree after falling straight down in the glider.

Even in a small glider flying behind a tow plane can be a tricky thing esp. in rough air. The tow plane jumps up and down, if you get to high you pull up the tow planes tail, if you are to far below you get in the prop wash. I can't even imagine how it must be in a heavy glider behind a huge 4 engine bomber.

These movies always gets me to remember the two American bomber pilots who are resting in their grave in a churchyard up here in Scandinavia. They have one of the bombers propeler as a tombstone. Sometimes when visiting that place i use to stop and say thanks for everything you did. I hope they rest in peace even if they died all to young in a sometimes mad world. 😥

i didnt like that there were so few people in the aircraft. I think a glider of that size would have a lot more people in it

My father flew a Horsa glider on this operation. March 24th 1945. He had a jeep, gun and six soldiers on the back. He was shot down by anti aircraft flak but managed to land ok ( he ended upside down). As an RAF pilot he had to fight like a soldier once he landed. He captured the anti aircraft crew that shot him down.
He survived the war and became a test pilot.
