In-story, Monika caused Yuri's unstable and irrational dark obsessions by amplifying a minor part of her psyche that was mild and well-controlled (and quite normal despite being unpleasant) into something unhinged and extreme.

In reality, some people suffer with such symptoms due to things like unbalanced brain chemistry, the aftereffects of extreme trauma, or physical damage to the brain by injury or disease. Sometimes they lose touch with reality or conscience and lose themselves to the malfunctioning part of their mind, other times they retain awareness or suffer intermittent periods of lucidity and insanity and are tortured by the guilt and fear of knowing what their damaged psyche is doing to them. They know these thoughts and urges are wrong, and struggle to control them, and hate when they fail to and blame themselves for it. And they fear, often with good reason, that their episodes might lead them to harm others or themselves seriously or perhaps even permanently.

Living with such a condition is nothing short of nightmarish, and it's tragic that it destroys innocent lives. We can only hope that the science of pshyciatry can continue to advance and bring relief to those who suffer with such a horrific illness.
