Which of these forgotten pies do you remember from your childhood?

My Mom had a cafe in a small town during the fifties and sixties. My Mom was from south Texas and was an awesome cook. Always having home made rolls and pies. People would bring in fruit for her to make pies and fruit rolls. She had a friend who would bring her sour cream and she would bake sour cream raisin pies . She would have to make at least 4 chocolate meringue pies, 2 lemon pies..one meringue and one with a lattice top….i mean..fresh strawberries and raspberries became delicious fruit rolled in sponge cake …blueberries, gooseberries, rhubarb, apple ..can you imagine…fresh pies with local produce. I’m 79 and so thankful I learn pie making from my Mom.

One pie you missed was Montgomery pie. It had a lemon custard filling and like Shoefly it could be wet or dry. It had a buttery top crust. My uncle and I used to eat them for breakfast. They were sold in almost every grocery store in York, Pa. and were always gone before noon. I still bake Shoefly pie for church dinners even though I have lived in WV for over 30 yrs. Everybody loves them. Thanks for the memories.

My Grandmother in southern Ontario was of German origin via Pennsylvania. She was a prize winning pie maker and passed on her skill to her daughter in law, my mom.I am 73 and remember the hours I spent in the kitchen with them as a child and fighting over the last piece of pie with my older brother.Sadly few people who work physically hard enough to healthily eat those kind of desserts anymore
But in the day we had them all Graham cracker custard with a meringue top.Rhubarb and rhubarb custard, coconut cream, chocolate, mincemeat, an apple pie with out a top crust.
Peach was my favorite. But in reality I loved them all..

I’m in Quebec, Canada, & raisin pie was a staple Christmas pie on the table but fell out of fashion long ago. I missed it and we made one last year, every bite was a delicious, sweet, childhood memory. 😊🥧❤️

Mince pie is still my favorite, and I enjoy it every Thanksgiving and Christmas! I'm going to look into molasses pie...and maybe that possum pie. Yum!😋

Back in the early 70’s my boyfriend’s grandmother served a buttermilk pie and I asked for the recipe. She graciously shared it with me and I still make it, the last time a few weeks ago. It’s still one of my favorites.

My wife ran across oatmeal pie from a magazine when we were living in Northern Alberta Canada. We were involved in scouting and the pies were popular in fund raising efforts. It was economical to make and not something that was common or even heard of in our area. I marketed it as mock pecan pie because I didn't think calling it oatmeal pie would sell. Our pies sold out instantly.

Mincemeat pie is still my favourite Christmas pie. It’s delicious!

Professional baker here. Most of these pies are still very popular. The big issue is that pies in general face more competition as a dessert choice, that does not mean pies are no longer loved, because they are, just making room for new classics and fads, that's all.

Mincemeat is probably my favorite type of pie. We also ate it during Thanksgiving right after hunting season.

Mincemeat besides pumpkin was at every Thanksgiving dinner I ever remember. I still love both! When I hear shoofly I think of Amish, I never saw it around where ever I lived. The raisin pie looks amazing. I remember the recipe for mock apple pie being printed on Ritz cracker boxes!

I am from Indiana and the Wicks pie company is just a little north of where I live. Sugar cream pie is common around here. They are sold frozen. If you want to eat them the day you buy them you can warm them in the oven at a low temp. Or you can let it thaw overnight in the Fridge. Either way it is amazing!
