Dumb Decisions: The STUPIDEST EXTRA POINT of the 2023 NFL Season | Vikings @ Eagles (2023)

Yes, I know that the Eagles won this game. No, I don't care. This was so bad that we've got to talk about it

In week 2 of the 2023 NFL season, when the Philadelphia Eagles played the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football, the Eagles went up by 12 points late in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run by D'Andre Swift. And for some reason, after scoring said touchdown, instead of trying to make it a 14-point game, they completely blanked on the math and kicked the meaningless extra point. This is a breakdown of Nick Sirianni's dumb decision

As an Eagles fan, I thought the same thing. Playcalling has been questionable at best so far this season

These 2 games showed how much we missed Stechen and Gannon. This is how championship teams struggle after reaching the SuperBowl because every year they'll lose coaches. Since the Eagles are known for being a well run organization. Teams are going to pluck our coaches every year because teams want to install the Eagles' winning culture. Still it's Week 2, we have a whole season to make adjustments. Plus we're 2-0, record wise we're the best in the league.

NFL coaches are taught to TAKE points not CHASE them. Going for 2 most likely never even entered Sirianni's mind.

Interesting fact, the line was Phily -6 so this decision had a major betting influence.

I totally was watching that when it happened and wondered if that would make dumb decisions??? Lol 😂

As an Eagles fan, I wasn't even thinking of this. I was thinking "I'm so glad the Eagles are winning." because Super Bowl teams having micro (or sometimes macro) collapses is sort of a trend now.

Hey, look on the bright side. At least Sirianni didn't have Jalen Hurts punt on second down.

I'm a part of this pool for work and needed exactly 55 points to win, was super thrilled they didn't try to go for 2 only for Minnesota to essentially score a garbage time td and give me a bad beat.

This is a head-scratcher, yes. However, I think Sirianni could argue that the likelihood the Vikings come back to make that a bad situation is unlikely.

The way the game was going, the Vikings aren't coming back.

Not only that, but it's still a two-possession game either way. Nothing precludes the Vikings from going for two and still potentially winning the game if they score two touchdowns.

0:39 Or, if you’re Al Michaels coming back from halftime, it’s at Veterans Stadium.

Some part of this feels like nitpicking a small moment of the game

That you are able to find these kinds of situations every single week shows that these coaches must have taken way too many blows to the head during their time as players. Actually, a lot of it just doesn't make sense. Since there's so much money involved in the NFL, and since these teams/organizations are trying to maximize profit I'm going to assume that like any other business of this size, no stone is left unturned and every aspect is hyper-analyzed. Given that, these types of situations are puzzling. What finally got me out of watching the NFL on a regular basis (I gave up after the 2017 season) was just how dreadful so many teams/coaches were at clock management during the final two minutes when the game was on the line. I'm not talking about me analyzing went wrong with the luxury of hindsight hours or days later, I'm talking in real time as it is happening. I'm no genius or student of the game but even a schlub like me can determine generally what to and what not to do mostly. When to use or save a time out, when to or not to call to plays down the middle, when to risk a running play, etc. I got so sick of seeing objectively stupid end-of-game management that I had to give up regularly subjecting myself to the world of the NFL.

Dang the Eagles made it on dumb decisions for the second week in a row. Not a good sign.

Also, 1994 is the cutoff for 2-point conversions in the NFL, so that's as far back as you can go, anyway. And, if JG9 had a nickel for every time an Eagles coach kicked an extra point when he should have gone for two, he'd have two nickels, which isn't much, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

The dumbest decision in that game was to stop handing the ball to Swift up two scores at the Vikings 25 yard line early in the fourth quarter. No the Eagles had to try for style points and keeping AJ Brown happy by trying to throw him a touchdown. Yeah a holding and a couple sacks later they lose 25 yards and are “punting” (in quotes because what Siposs does is hardly punting). It was like watching a dad play basketball with a kid letting him score when they decided to stop running the ball down their throats there.

Objection: You can't have a national television audience with Amazon Prime. It's not a TV channel.

Point spread was Philly -6, if you don’t realize that NFL is heavily manipulated by this point then your not paying close enough attention.

This game was very strange in general.
