If Catholicism would be the only option for a person to have for a religion then does a person truly have free will to worship as a Catholic?
I strayed from Catholic church many years ago. I read up on some other religions and tried to follow Buddhism only to recently come back to Catholicism. I read teaching of some Hindu and some Buddhist monks that helped me to be a better person and without that exposure would have never come back to Catholicism.
Is it part of the grand design by God to have multiple religions? I don't know, but if God wants us all to choose to follow him would it not make sense to allow multiple options to test ones free will?

To me, it seems like Pope Francis wanted to ensure that his clarification on what he meant got out to the Catholics who really cared about it, while simultaneously avoiding drawing controversy from any other non-Catholics (or even other Catholics, which would be ironic here lol).

I agree with you that other religious people (like Muslims) would understand the distinction and agree with his clarification. However, if I were some reporter who didn't exactly like the Pope, and was keeping tabs on the Pope's actions and I saw Pope Francis offering the clarification himself, I could take his clarification statement to its logical conclusion and run an article along the lines of “Pope Francis says God simply allows other religions to exist but really, the other ones are wrong and God wants everyone to be Catholic. Talk about bridge building!" I mean yeah, most every religion believes "my religion is the true religion" to apply to them. So I think Pope Francis was trying to avoid saying the quiet part out loud... which, IF that's the case, is terribly worldly. Unfortunately, we'll probably never know.

The statement sounds like something a Unitarian Universalist would say. His clarification only makes things more complicated. He should have just taken it back.

I bet he was reading "Unseen Realm" by Michael Heiser. Basically God got so pissed off at humanity he assigned the nations to the number of the sons of God while allotting Jacob for his inheritance (Dt 32:8) but afterwards He excoriated them for their crap job and decided to retake the nations for himself (Ps. 82) which led to the coming of the Messiah to break the bonds of these "gods" over mankind and invite them back into the fold. Oddly enough "Critias" by Plato says something similar about nations being allotted gods.

Unfortunately, putting all those things together (religion, race, sex, etc., ) makes it sound somewhat like a reference to the social justice crowd. It indeed sounded weak and confusing. I wish Pope Francis did less of this sort of 🙏🏼

Catholics are bound to Communion & the sacraments but God is NOT bound to the sacraments. Pope St Gregory the Great spoke about God not withholding the fruits of the atonement of Jesus death on the cross from anyone

God can do no wrong, he cannot cause evil to happen, he can allow it for a purpose that would lead someone back to the faith.
