"How Can I Afford A Home In California"

Buy a tent.

I was born and raised in Silicon Valley CA, went to school both ug and grad (MBA) in CA, and tried for several years to work and be successful in the bay area. At age 32 I left CA permanently and never looked back. Without the CA prices and stress, I now own a home and have a solid job. I also have green trees, parks and services, a community full of arts and education, a 6 minute "commute, " a plan to retire, and absolute peace.

This guy is planning to buy a house in silicon valley and he is still in community college. Unreal.

What planet does he live on

I used to live in Ontario. I was priced out of the market. I would never be able to buy a house there. I left and moved to Alberta. Now I own 2 houses. Wealthy people are pricing everyone else out of the market in certain places.  You aren't them. let them have their way. Don't be their low wage servants. MOVE.

$2, 000, 000 for a 1, 500 sq ft house there.
Rents are $2, 500 to 3, 000 for a 1 bedroom apartment.
You are dreaming.
Move away.

It’s stupid how you have to have an income of 200, 000$ a year just to be considered middle class in cali I hate it here

Why does he want to buy a house, yet still did not graduate and hold a job for at least 5 years and have bunch of savings. Dude just have to wait and be patient.

Going to community college in the most expensive neighborhood in the USA, living with parents = finish degree, and move.

I left CA 16 years ago and never looked back. I make good money in AZ and live like a king.

Want a Silicon Valley home without a Silicon Valley income or savings account. It’s a no from me.

Senior chemical engineer at LSU here. An entry level chem e position in Cali will NOT pay “a hundred a half”. Not even close. If he’s lucky he’ll get about 100. Which is great but not suitable for the life he’s trying to live

Two months ago we were given 60 days notice to move out of our 3-bedroom, 2K square foot house in Simi Valley (just west of Los Angeles County). We ended up buying our first house in the Phoenix area.

Numbers never lie.

When I transferred to Berkeley to go to UCB, my first apartment was a very small 2 bedroom 1 bathroom and the rent was $3, 000 with no utilities covered. It's insane.

I was paying $2100/mo for a middle-of-the-road 2 bedroom apt in Silicon Valley and that was back in 1999 during the first dotcom bubble

Even if you can afford to live or buy a house in California why would you? The taxes are high and the houses are severely overpriced.

Great advice. The itch to buy instead of rent is strong, but it’ll turn a dream into a nightmare if they buy a house now. Love Dave’s advice here— enjoy the adventure of renting the next 3+ years while you double your household income and save up a hefty down payment.

Newsflash: a associates degree in chemical engineering will pay about 15 dollars an hour.... You need a bachelor's or masters to even make 75k out of college.
