Driving in Shetland | Shetland Life

Marjolein is a comedian fromShetland - a Scottish island known for its tiny horses, and being quite remote. Now, the best way to get around in Shetland is by car, but there are some very specific driving etiquette rules that must be observed.
For example:
Whenever you are driving around Shetland and you meet another car, always wave. There’s two waves you can do, there’s the one finger wave, and then there’s the two finger wave. Any more as that and you really need to know the person.
When you’re driving down hill on a road and someone’s coming up hill, you should always pull over and give right of way to them, otherwise you’re an arsehole.
Lastly always allow an extra 15 or 20 minutes onto your journey. Because the road is a brilliant place for socializing and you never know when you are going to come across that. Better not interrupt.

I am going to Shetland in July August and your commentary has really cracked me up. Loved your comedy and if I meet people like you while I'm there I may not want to leave. Some of the comedy is very similar to Australia (yes I live in Australia) and yes I am hiring a car while there thanks to you for the tips. I'm sure I most probably will be one the people talking from car to car and stopping traffic. All the best

You do that too?! I lived in rural Minnesota and South Dakota for a while and we always did the one and two finger wave. I always thought it was just a rural Midwestern thing.

Of course, MN and SD did get a lot of Scottish immigrants (it’s why we pronounce /a/ and /i/ the same way as you) so it makes sense.

Where I live often if you are driving doonhill the uphill driver gives way because they can stop easier. but the signs usually decide this
