Ep4. Narrowboat Sandbag Sunday - I've Become a Fanatic

There is a difference in my behaviour when cruising and when I'm moored up. I've become a fanatic. I want to conserve water and electricity. So much so, I am becoming obsessed. I also discuss Bernoulli's Principle in the water as it has a big effect when we have shallow water on the canals.

I am sure you understand that those who follow you really enjoy your vlogs..I could listen to you all day. Your standard vlogs during the week all vloggers use, not to your standard although the boat that James built is very good. However your Sunday Sandbag is unique and extremely educational and amusing. You are a major asset to Narrow Boating. Just one question . When will you take the patriot route! Thanks again. Great explanation. I also notice the effect when two boats are slowly going into a double lock. One slightly ahead of the other the second boat is ‘ encouraged’ gently alongside, making the double entry much easier. Great to see you relaxing in your adjustment 👏🌟👍 Joan

Hey there.

Here is a shower water conservation TIP - place a CLEAN bucket under the shower head to collect all the cold to tepid water while waiting for the HOT water to reach the shower.
No wasted water.
THEN use that water for washing / rinsing dishes and/or cold water clothes washing.


By the way, your candid to-camera sandbagging chats are interesting, entertaining and brilliant. Pls keep doing these, especially if and when you need a break from or do not any cruising footage for your Tuesdays vlog.

Nice one Chris. Bernoulli effect is the same one that makes lift over an aircraft wing. The curved upper wing surface forces the air to move faster over it because it has to travel further. Moving fluid has a lower pressure than static fluid, so the wing is forced up into the lower pressure area. Thats 'lift'. So turn that wing upside down and call it a boat hull and the 'lift' works downwards and pulls the hull downwards in the water the faster you go.

Chris, just brilliant, class act. I was laughing when you where talking about a splash of aftershave when on the "Pull" and the other half asked me why, I told her that it reminded me of the good old barrack room days, Friday and Saturday night, the block stank to high heaven with all the lads giving it large for that nights entertainment, love it 😅🤣. I have always been frugal with water usage having been brought up with no hot water, outside lavvy and frost on the inside of the windows in winter, I learnt very quickly how to live with the basics and still be presentable, my father always had 3 simple rules, tidy hair, clean shoes and soap and water was cheap. Very good design point for future builds, keep the calorifier close to the bathroom, saves loads of water. As I have said before, I know nothing about NB's but do enjoy my F1, ground effect is very similar whereby it sucks the car onto the road giving it more downforce. I'll add to this comment when I can think of an intelligent question for next weeks SBS, take care. EDIT: Not necessarily a Boaty or intelligent question what editing software do you use for your vlogs.

Something 20 years on a sailing boat with a much smaller water tank than yours taught us was to take a bottle/container into the shower with you and then run all the cold water off into it. Then tip it back into the tank after your shower. The narrowboat we are building will have a set up where by at the push of a button the hot water pipework can be flushed back into the water tank - so just push the button for x number of seconds and then you get instant hot water in the shower or at the kitchen sink.

Collapsible water can. When taking a shower run hot water and fill up the water can. When your hot water is flowing, take your shower and empty the water can back into your water tank. It's what Boater do to save water.

Run the shower into a bucket until it gets warm. Use that cold water to do the dishes.
