John Lennon’s murder is arguably the most famous example. It happened in the blink of an eye, shocking the entire world. His killer’s motives include religious indignation and a desire for fame.
Other musicians were also killed by their fans. Christina Grimmie won The Voice and became a star before being murdered by an obsessed fan. Selena tried to stop the leader of her fan club from embezzling money from her store but was killed for it. Dimebag Darrell of Pantera was killed during a show after a fan had a mental breakdown.

TV and film icons also suffered the same fate. Rebecca Shaefer of My Sister Sam was met with a gunshot outside of her home after a fan didn’t get enough of a response to his letters. Even sports stars can’t escape these fates. Albert Ebosee was hit by a projectile after accidentally scoring a goal for the other team (or at least that’s the current explanation). Andres Escobar became the victim of a cartel after his team was tied up in their scheme.

The newspapers romanticized the outlaw Jesse James until one of his own gang members, who also admired him, killed him for the reward money. Russian writer Mikhail Lermontov couldn’t control his mouth and end up in a duel with his best friend and biggest fan. Rebecca's death lead to anti-stalking laws and prevented anyone from getting addresses from the DMV again. Andres’ family now runs a program to keep children away from drugs and theft.

Selena Quintanilla and John Lennon are the ones that were most tragic to me. Both such good talented people. So, so sad.

The killers don't sound like they were fans. They seemed more like they wanted to be famous themselves and didn't care who they hurt in the process. It's tragic in all of these cases. Many of them worked hard to gain the recognition they had earned & were taken down by people who didn't want to work for what they felt they deserved.

John Lennon was the most tragic for me. I was a senior in high school. I was getting ready for school when I found out. They announced it on good morning America. I'm a huge beatles fan so it hit me hard. R.I.P John.

While all of them are tragic, I have to say John Lennon. I loved him as a Beatle and on his own. He and his music 🎶 will always be remembered.

Selena has to be the most tragic to me. She was young, attractive and talented...to be shot in the back by her manager is more than tragic.

I was studying for finals at UCLA in December of 1980. I took a break and switched on the radio only to hear John Lennon had been shot. My first thought was "it had to be a mugging. Who would want to kill John Lennon?" The next day the vast classroom hall was filled with students wearing Lennon badges and pins. A voice for peace was stilled but not silenced.

The most devastating and personal assassination for me was John Lennon's. At the time of his death I was living in San Francisco having travelled from Edmonton Canada in early November 1980 where I'd been living as a landed immigrant. I'm originally from England and spent most of my life in the Manchester area and the overall travelling distance between the two cities is barely 40 miles. I'd been a Beatles fan since the start of the band's rise to fame from the age of 10 until they disbanded in the early 1970's when I was aged 18.

When he was assassinated on 8th December 1980 it was obviously devastating for me but the amount of outpourings from the people that I'd got to know in the first month of me living there was with them coming out with their typically American condolences towards me. I got fed up with hearing from them and told them that it wasn't me that they should be apologising to or sending their condolences to but they should've been sending them to John's widow Yoko and their small son Sean immediately after his murder, shouldn't they? I told them that if they didn't have such a love of guns throughout their entire country in the first place then his murder might not have happened.

Within four weeks of his assassination I left that damned country forever and returned to some semblance of normality and civilisation back in Canada. I have since returned to the U.K. and whenever anyone asks me what it's like to live in the U.S.A. I always sarcastically tell them that if they're so masochistic that they want to visit that damned country and get shot and / or murdered by some maniac then so be it.

Nothing much has happened in that country between then and now especially when we all consider the fact that the number of mass shootings just this year ( 2022 ) has totalled over 600. The only thing that's guaranteed about the U.S.A. is that whenever mass shootings happen the only thing that we hear out of the mouths of Americans is their "....thoughts and prayers...." bull$hit and their firearms' sales dramatically increase. As of December 2021 there were 436.4 million guns in the U.S.A. which obviously means that out of a total population in that country of just over 333 million there are over 103 million more guns than there are people, aren't there? Those gun figures have probably increased since the end of last year and the only people that have profited from those gun sales are the arms' manufacturers, their ghoulish shareholders, the NRA and all of their lobbyists in Washington D.C., aren't they? 👎😡👎
