Conor redefines the long arm of the law.

I was a PCSO in Lincolnshire (UK) over 10 years ago and used my Police bike to get around my beat area all the time. I averaged around 25 miles each shift. It was great to get to incidents, locate missing people and get through the little cuts through the estates. I did a lot of engagement with other cyclists to prevent cycle theft, including bike marking and I even got funding to give away lights and d-locks. I used it when I delivered Bikeablilty sessions at the local schools. It was one of the best things about the job and made me very visible to the public.

I’m sooo impressed with how much the standard of Conor’s videos has improved recently, so much so that now I watch everything he does. Not that long ago he seemed happy to play class clown on occasion… (eg certain bike packing episodes and THAT gravel race) but his recent stuff has much more impact. He seems to have hit that perfect combination of thorough research, and deceptively simple presentation of complex topics that makes for an entertaining and still scientifically accurate treatment, especially in the sports science and training areas of cycling. And this video continues his current streak - respectful, informative and unexpectedly entertaining. Cop for a day is another A+.

I was privileged to patrol by bicycle as an Arizona State Park Ranger back in the day. (Even did a coupla rescues out on the trail!)
What a cool episode!!

I like how the title destroys all the "suspense" at the intro lol

Absolutely love this content and the insights it provides!! In addition to quick response and connecting officers to the public because they can communicate, in addition to the quick response is the stealth aspect of the bike. In North America, police can use bikes to quietly patrol busy crowded city parks where criminals aren't expecting stealthily approaching police. More like this Conor and gcn. Well Done!

I was a policeman in York in the early 80s and often patrolled on a bike. As a young detective I was responsible for collating bicycle thefts which at that time was about 1200 per year, 10% of the recorded crime in the Division. We recovered many but often we could not identify the owner. Nothing much has changed!

Good video! Nice to see the human and polite side of police. But I was quite surprised to see a GNC rider can indeed remain upright on the bike without a stitch of lycra!

Hi. Really interesting stuff. I'm liking the non performance oriented bike content.
Bikes are so much more than leisure/sport. Thanks

Just to add to something one of the policemen said; it is free to register your bike on the bike register but if you want to have tamper-proof marking then there is a small cost, ranging from £12.99 to £29.99 depending on the level you choose. The point of having a visible marker (in addition to allowing the police to trace owners) is that if you go to buy a bike you can check with the register to see if it has been reported stolen. Well worth the cost IMO.

Thanks Conor for this look into the use of bikes in the law enforcement environment. We see Toronto Police on bikes on a regular basis and very intrigued by how they help in keeping our community safe. They go through some very intensive training to do this. Glad you guys put a light on this subject. Totally enjoyed it!

Cool topic!! Thanks for respecting their jobs while filming what you could without interfering. I love that they’ve created a bike registry to help reunite owners with stolen and recovered bikes. In my country we have a similar issue: people don’t report their bikes stolen, so when bikes are recovered police have no way to know who the bikes belong to. A bike registry seems like a great idea!

I loved riding as a police officer . Unfortunately, we didn’t have a full time unit, but it was one of the tools available for our unit that covered the downtown area of our city.

The main issue seemed to be the supervisors who thought (I guess) that the traditional methods of patrolling were the best.

I was a bicycle training officer, and I encouraged them to take the training course and maybe they would see how effective bikes can be.

It's a shame the day was cut short, this was a really good addition to GCN's video library.

These guys are clearly proof that the concept works, why is it left to the community support officers? As the "arrest" in the video shows, they were first responders but lacked the full powers

It's great to see the bikes outperform the car in that urban environment.

All the kudos to Connor, this was a very enjoyable episode. Felt like a Miami Detective with bikes type of thing!
