Tambourines for Classical and Popular music

This video is a survey of Orchestral and Pop Tambourines and well as a tutorial on how to change heads, pick an instrument and maintain a Tambourine. A few years back I posted a Tambourine lesson which talked more about the playing techniques.

Once again I find myself going back to your videos. Next week I will be playing some excerpts from The Nutcracker and I remember the lesson you gave us on a tambourine Teo thumb roll 😳😳. Thank you Rick for always sharing these videos!

Much love from the city of brotherly love!

Thanks for all of this Wonderfull information. I am a conga player and have training in Latin and African percussion. I now play with a soul band and am using the tambourine much more. I’ve really come to love playing the tamb and find it really interesting to learn about the different applications and styles that this instrument can be used within, weather that is orchestral, popular or soul/gospel style (which I’m working on). Was really great to hear your thoughts and pick up on your tips, tricks and advice… Best Ade

This was an excellent video by the way, one of YouTubes best.

I liked the deeper drum tones of your larger tambourines 👍

34:37 I needed that rhythm (first three jingles) so I sampled it lol. Its hard to come by great tambourine sets and plugins, at-least to my knowledge. Thanks so much for the demonstration, it saved me hours of time of looking and downloading odd VST plugins from weird websites!

on the hunt for a new studio tamb, tired of the rhythm tech and found this great episode! I'm on the hunt now for the mystery one. I think it might be this Latin Percussion LP Aspire LPA190 10" Tambourine. What is the black shake one that sounds dry, you played it right after the LP at 40:58? thx

In our band, we have a no-name tambourine with no-name head. Said head is syntethic, but smooth and white. Is there anything - except sand paper - that allows me to do thumb rolls on that?

(we have 2 oval shaped LP tambourines without head, ~same model but one is to be mounted and the other is to be held. The ones you call "shake tambourines") but they sometimes sound too modern for the music we play, but the headed tambourine doesn't sound good with a shake roll, and as mentioned, it's nearly impossible to do a thumb roll.... so hoping you have some tips for that ;)

Also, about the sticks at 33:34 I believe they are called Jingle Sticks by LP (but not really sure)

Did you perfect the two-handed thumb roll you worked on several years back?

Thanks for posting such great videos, I was wondering if you could post a video where you explain time signatures, binary, tinary or duple and triple, compound time and various polyrhythms, hemiola etc, anything that has to do with analysis of rhythm would be great

Hi Rick, great overview, thank you.
Do you have any opinions on Harlan tambourines? I’m considering their Spanish style model, but can’t seem to find any reviews or observations. Thanks
