Why Did the Turtle Cross the Road?! To avoid downsizing of course!

Turtles often cross roadways in an attempt to find mates or locate an appropriate nesting site! It is warming up which means reptiles are sure to be on the move! Be sure to drive aware and watch for turtles on the roads. If you are in a rural area, move the turtle ~5 meters (15’) off of the road IN THE DIRECTION THEY WERE HEADED. In the case of city living, or in an area of high construction, bringing the animal your local nature center may be the best alternative.
Please DO NOT take wild turtles or tortoises home to keep as a pet! In many States it is ILLEGAL to be in possession of native chelonian species, many of which are classified as Endangered, and removing even one specimen from the local ecosystem could have exponentially negative effects.
With as long lived as turtles and tortoises are the loss of a single mature animal deprives the ecosystem of decades of potential population growth. Due to the fact that turtles and tortoises are solitary creatures which meet rarely, and their young have poor survival rates, every member of that population is necessary to ensure the continued survival of the species.
