Aptamers are structured, single-stranded nucleic acid molecules that fold into defined secondary structures and act as ligands that interact with target proteins by way of their three-dimensional structure and adaptive fit.

Aptamers oligonucleotides are synthesized by an in vitro evolution methodology called SELEX (systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment).
