Just FYI. Iceland is one of the nordic countries. Denmark Sweden and Norway being the scandinavian countries Finland and Iceland are included in the Nordics.

I was born in Iceland and used to go back for summer break every year. I can 100% attest to babies being left outside stores. Even better, if the baby is crying good chance a stranger will stop to rock it back to sleep.

A unicorn of a country indeed.

Probably the only country worldwide where it is near impossible to take a 'wrong' picture.

When beer became legal, a lot of fights stopped, and others started

I was in Iceland for almost 3 months last summer and really enjoyed the midnight sun. I have been in Finnish Lapland for 4 months now and have survived the polar night very well thanks to vitamin D tablets. During this time, I did not meet any depressed Finns. These actually cope very well with the long polar night. What I particularly liked about Iceland except the gigantic nature was that there is no McD - not one branch in the whole country!!!

Yes, the name selection is limited due to an effort to uphold the icelandic language, and if people outside the country move here and have a child the same applies to them but you can come up with names outside of the selection of names as long as it works well with the language(hope that clears it up😁)

Fermented shark is most def. not a "typical" food in Iceland lol, it is a traditional food that is not very often eaten today, most taste it maybe once a year as a side treat with other old traditional meals ....and many wont touch it, especially younger generations.

The housing market is going crazy right now. Everything is so insanely expensive that there is no hope to be able to buy a house unless you are from a very ritch family. Renting is also very high, sometimes 35 to 55% of your salary.

7:25 Iceland is the second largest island in Europe after England?
According to my knowledge, the largest island in Europe is Greenland.
Greenland (Danish) is on the American continent but belongs to Europe.
The Canary Islands (Spanish) are located on the African continent and is a part of Europe.

Now I'm not the most experienced with this as I am a young Icelander who does not have any children (yet) but if I remember correctly you can attempt to name your baby anything but it must go through a complex screening process and those 2.500 are just the ones that are officially recognized names.
For example I use my own name as my user name: Dalkvist is not recognized ans an official name so my name can not end in it. A full name must at least end in an officially recognized name!
EDIT: Fun fact is that the great geyser is actually where the English word for geyser comes from as the Icelandic word for that specific geyser is Geysir!

I have never seen a rat in my life, live in east Iceland. Small mice, sure, but they are harmless and a little cute

Nate. When people have a negative view of the USA, they should bear in mind that view accounts for 40-45%. The vast majority are like you which is accepting, intellectually curious and wanting more for those less fortunate. Love the channel.

They have changed it, but we get more names on the list year by year

8:25 the name list is mainly to protect the Icelandic language and if the name falls within the laws of what the name must have or be able to do then that name is acceptable.
9:50 the sheeps are now about 450 thousand not 600 thousand.
23:08 i don't think this is happening in Iceland much, i think its maybe happened allot back in the day.
24:12 The svið food its not an correct picture shown there. not sure if you would even wanna see the real picture. back in the old day the brain was also used as food and you can still get some today, everything of the sheep was used due to food not being easy to come by like that, and wasting food was not well likened.
27:56 the food he describes i have never heard of and i believe its food from back in the day.
