Hyundai Ioniq hybrid 2018 in-depth review | carwow Reviews

It’s a family hatchback with an eco-friendly difference. That’s because its petrol engine gets a helping hand from an electric motor, which helps to slash its fuel bills - especially in urban driving. But how much fuel will you save, and does the rest of the car make it worthwhile? Find out in my full in-depth review.

I got this car for my wife, we drove to Switzerland from London on one tank of fuel, and on motor ways it has auto steer and braking which was amazing and a standard option. So was apple car play and tons of extra features which would of cost me a bundle in any German car.

I absolutely love this car, and give it full thumbs up

This is how the prius should look.
Thank you hyundai for making an appealing hybrid city car.

Having lived with one of these for 12 months, I can attest to it being a fantastic vehicle. The heated seats and steering wheel as standard is a massive bonus in the winter. The climate control uses the hybrid battery rather than the engine so it gets warm very quickly. The reason why the Hyundai badge is plastic at the front is that the radar for the cruise sits behind it. Mat seemed to overlook one of the best features of this car - it's semi-autonomous driving mode is awesome. On the motorway you can switch on lane keep assist and speed adaptive cruise and the car literally drives and steers itself. You can even choose how close you want to get to the car in front with a button. Granted it tells you off for taking your hands off the wheel, but I have driven from Yorkshire to the south coast via motorways without actually needing to do much at all apart from control at junctions :) As a long distance tourer this really is awesome. Economical, easy to drive, loads of toys, lovely digital dashboard, decent sat nav and comfy seats. I actually don't know how they do it for the money.
Downsides - the engine is torquey, especially the electric engine, but the tyres aren't up to the job as they're eco ones. They wheelspin really easily so you have to be careful when pulling away quickly. The rear windscreen wiper missing is a PITA (although I use RainX on it to try and improvise), there's a noticeable echo when you use Apple Carplay to make phone calls for the person at the other end of the phone (it's improved since the firmware update recently, but it's still there - so you have to unplug from Carplay and use Bluetooth to make phone calls), because it's a hybrid you can't tow anything or put a roof rack or roof box on it - it's towing and roof load figures are 0 - which is a pain if you want to take 4 bikes anywhere. I have managed to get two in the boot but needed to put the back seats down. If I need to use the roof box I have to use my Skoda.
Lastly - make sure your Hyundai dealer puts the service details into the car. Ours was so new Hyundai hadn't worked out the service interval so we didn't get the service details programmed in - so we overshot the first service. But all sorted now.

The fact that the car rides, steers, handles and drives like a "normal" car is a huge achievement for a hybrid vehicle. You seem to have downplayed these credentials in your review and made the car seem worse than it is

I bought a new one in 2018 to use it for Uber. I still have it with 141k miles, more than 4 years working mainly in city. I had no problem with it, just bulbs, but I changed everything to led and problems solved. In rest everything is from the factory, brakes pads, etc…. I crossed Europe on it 4 times. Very good and reliable car. 73-75 mpg in summer and 57-65 in winter doing taxi mainly city. I still love it ❤❤❤

The flat Hyundai logo is there for the radar, not for aero

It looks so so so so much better than the Prius.

That "flat badge" is hiding the radar, it's a necessity.

Been in one of these before, absolutely amazing car no matter what review you watch it does not do it justice.

It's a damn better looker than the prius so for that reason alone I'd pick this one.

As a 6ft 2 owner of this car, I don’t have an issue with head room in the back seat. If you choose to tilt your head as far back as possible to reach the roof then good for you. Otherwise it’s not an issue: the head restraint is set correctly would stop you getting to that point anyway. Poor reviewing of this great value, award winning hybrid. The tech as standard is not matched by competitors, especially in the price point. Don’t just go on videos, go experience and make your own minds up

My friend is 6ft 3, sat in the back fine, I asked him several times about the head room, he was fine and his head wasn’t touching the back

I hate it when car reviewers dig for tiny faults in Korean cars.

Auto lock has never ever annoyed me, I find it extremely helpful and secure feeling.

I feel like this review was biased and strangely negative off the bat. Been a huge carwow fan for a while and I'd like to say i know Matt's review style but this video seemed negative from the get-go and it like he didn't give it a chance from the start. I feel features he usually praises or appreciates (I.e soft touch materials etc) were definitely down-played for their achievements. Also I think it's a shame and a little hypocritical that they made a video a while ago about how to correctly pronounce car company names and Hyundai was one of them but a shame he still pronounces it incorrectly "Hi-yoon-die" versus "hee-yun-day". A bit ironic and not a big deal but it's like c'mon now, you should practice what you preach.
Not sure why I'm leaving this comment/I noticed it so much in this video but I guess it's cause I'm a huge fan of matt's reviews and by association carwow

I think this should have been a ''shortlist'' it's really one of the best hybrids out there at the moment and a lot cheaper than a Prius.

Got the Hyundai hybrid Premium SE model recently. (2018 -UK) Loving it. Easily the best car I have ever had. Early days but averaging 62 mpg although I did have it in the sport mode a few times which makes it feel a different car again. Have to get used to a silent car on start up. Looks stunning in the platinum silver finish and much better looking than the Prius. Dual clutch automatic super smooth.
