I would say communication is everything, basically because if you are in a leadership position, it's similar to being a parent to children. If the parent can't communicate clearly enough with the children, the children will not do what the parent tells them, and the same goes for an organization. For me, good leadership is about getting connected with the people in the organization. For example, if you are an executive, you need to understand the basic conditions where your employees live or work, and the way they are, so you need to have a relationship, you need to have rapport with people in the organization because once you get that, they will start listening to you because you are the authority by nature of your role.

One of the biggest problems or mistakes I've seen is that they are not prepared and they don't know how media and external parties will tweak and twist the information because they would like to make a story out of it. Maybe the executive has no interest in making a story, just making some statements, but everything you say can be misinterpreted and misjudged. If you're talking to people, for journalists for instance, who are really seeking the news, you need to be careful what you say.

I think if you're not in a C-level position and not by nature a communicator, you need to spend a lot of time working with people who know the rhetoric, know what to say, and how to say it, and how to address things. So, get a coach, get a mentor who can support them to become more clear with their message.
