Rhizomes, Why Artists and Activists Should Care about Crabgrass | Blue Stool #19

Показать описание

David Mills, assistant dean and instructor in the Core Division at Champlain College, discusses the concept of rhizomes as formulated by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, and how the concept can impact art and activism.

The Blue Stool Lecture Series gives Champlain College faculty and staff the opportunity to share their passion for learning and ideas with students (and others) outside of the classroom. The Blue Stool talks are meant to provoke thought, deepen understanding and encourage listeners to reconsider ways of knowing.

I came across Schizoanalytic Cartographies a few months ago, and its ideas found my way into my AP 2D design portfolio (i literally cut up maps lol). Just found this video. So glad other people are interested in this amazing work. It DID characterize art as a political statement. More people should understand it as such.

it's good to show some deleuze/guattari to the world and say, "let's organize like al-q*eda"

Haha I’m so dumb (and art-damaged): I misread the title, and clicked it so I could find out what a “Why Artist” is.

“Wait, what is Why Art? How come I’ve never heard of this movement, esp if it’s somehow related to D&G??” -dumb me (but now with new ideas)

This is managerial (arborescent) capture of the rhizome concept where the practice of the agenda reflects upon itself to adapt to a changing environment. What it amounts to saying is that effective globalization has to be wrenched out of its Western origin (the Atlantic system of the early modern period) in order to more fully realize it. A truly revolutionary act would be to challenge the *process of globalization itself*. Deleuze sides with the nomad, the tribe - as he says, 'there is nothing outside the context.' What we have here is a simulation of the rhizome in the form of a neo-liberal dispositive intent upon wielding connectivity to destroy context itself. This is why D&G propose a 'line of flight.' To avoid connections that would impede organic function.

Btw, you know this bugman probably winces at the thought of insisting native Americans conform to the Anglo 'rule of law' (SO PROBLEMATIC), but has zero problem with Somalis shipping into Minnesota (connection!!!).

i see his point with Hegel's political stances. Nevertheless to call him a tree thinker rather than a rhizome thinker is truly missing the totality on his work of on dialectal systems, contradictions, and logic
