Justyce McAllister is a great friend, smart, thoughtful and black. His mom raised him well and the reader is led to believe that the incident that occurs in this first chapter of Dear Martin, wakes him up to discrimination. He thought IT happened to OTHER kids, those that live in poor neighborhoods, but dress a certain way, act a certain way. Justyce doesn't understand how it could have happened to him. So begins his literary writing journal to the peace loving advocate of justice, Martin Luther King, Jr. It's a book that will open the reader's eyes along with Justyce's.
I include my take on the book at the 17 minute mark. It is a remarkable book to use in discussion about racial discrimination, reverse discrimination, challenges in America, and freedoms we take for granted and ideals we'd like to strive for.
