Danish biologist here! Yea, those Danish megalodon vertebrae had been gathering dust on the shelves of the Natural History Museum of Copenhagen up until now (about 50 years I think). It should be noted, that although those same verts have often been referred to as O. megalodon, it is not certain, as shark verts are usually very similar to each other. Other paleontologists here in Denmark have also suggested those verts to be from something similar to a basking shark (but of course, much much larger). So it is an interesting study, but it should also be taken with grain of salt in terms of the Danish shark vert.

I'm all for the megalodon looking less like a scaled up great white and looking more like its own thing!

The slenderness of Megalodon makes absolute sense to me. In hindsight it actually feels silly to imagine that it would have the same proportions as a much smaller animal. A Blue Whale is probably a better comparison and they are very slender.

Dr. Ian Malcom: Yeah, but your scientists were so caught up with whether or not you could you didn't stop to think if you should!
Scientists: We should make Woolly Mice?
Dr. Ian Malcom: Yes, you should.

Dr. Shimada has referred to this paper as the culmination of his life’s work on Megalodon. I really encourage everyone to read this paper directly, especially since it was intentionally published for free access. It’s crazy dense and long, but well worth the read. 🦈

The "mildly chaotic" aspect of the unboxings is the best part. Carry on (literally).

In a world of increasing AI channels and sensationalist clickbait, you're one of the very few science news channels I will actually watch

Of course it was in Argentina.
So many titanosaurs are found there.

Also, gotta love Megalodon joining the “Getting bigger with every new study” club that T.rex is in.

The Woolly Mouse is a way better hybrid than the Indominus Rex.

As one of the authors in the O. megalodon paper, I was as surprised as anyone about how the size estimate came out.
