Too fast, too fast, too fast. That boat would have no problems with a lot worse than that if he'd stop gunning it over the top of the waves. When I was younger I had an absolute peice of shit 17 foot Bayliner Capri bowrider with an 85 horse us marine outboard on it that would occasionally run. Used to take that thing in open water on northern Lake Michigan in 7 footers all day. 7 foot great Lakes waves are no joke but could be done even in that little boat with proper throttle control. Sure a 3 mile trip would take us 2 hours and the throttle handle would be about ready to snap off by the end of the crossing from being worked so hard. Power up the wave, let off near the Crest, float over the top, hard on her again out of the trough. Never once sank the damn thing even though all the "experts" in their 24 foot liberators and bigger cruisers used to tell us how stupid we were. We didn't care, we were young, and had a damn boat that was 100 percent ours off the income from summer jobs before we were 18. Other people our age were trying to afford video game consoles, we had a boat. Not our parents boat. Our boat. We were practically invincible.

Had one of those Stingray models. This boat was boat was originally designed for I/O power. They made an outboard powered version of the same hull. That change to outboard power pushed the center of gravity further towards the stern. That rearward position of the CG made the boat slap hard in any type of head sea at any reasonable speed. You could take large head seas, but you had to trim the nose up and go slow to better cut through the waves with the hull. Other than that, you would slap the hull (and yourself) hard.

that's how you learn, the captain did the right thing getting out of that quickly

The biggest mistake was not knowing how to leave the inlet...a small bowrider can do this, but they need to a few things:
1. Know the conditions...know the wave forecast and any weather that may be on the way.
2.Time it better....don't go out during maximum outflowing ebb tide such as this appeared. This stacks the waves and stands them up, making them steep.
3. Once you're crossing the inlet, keep going...turning around is usually more dangerous.
4. Trim that nose down and go slow heading out....trim the nose up and stay on the backside of the wave heading in (notice how he nearly stuffs the bow when a wave runs up behind him coming in...that's how you sink a boat in seconds)
5. Before crossing the inlet, look at how other boats are doing it before attempting yourself....if you see bigger boats struggling, your little bowrider shouldn't even try.

You can see the fear on his face. It's good to fear the sea. It takes a smart person to know when to turn back.

people making comments needs to use more common sense like the guy that turned his bathtub around and went home. someone would show a guy riding a motorcycle down a snowy road and some people would say how dumb and others would brag how they can ride their gold wing up and down a ski hill cuz they're awesome

I used to take my little 14' aluminum boat through an inlet way worse than that. Used to disappear between the waves. Wasn't fun but the boat did fine. The boat in this video could easily handle those swells. The driver... maybe not.

inexperienced... smart to turn back...a more experienced captain would just back off throttle a little to stop from catching air time like an ass hat

Hopefully all of the comments from the last year or so have made all of these people experts

I take my little 14 foot fiberglass runabout in waves like this, its all about throttle control. Took my brother out one year and he almost pissed his pants, I was laughing the whole time... Its like snowmobiling, the rougher it gets, the more fun you have!

Cant believe these smaller boats stopping in between waves dont get swamped...looked like pretty close calls.

I thought he was gonna lose it at 0:36, never let a wave bigger than you overtake you from behind.
