In this London Guide Joolz explains how the streets got their names and how the narrowing of the river caused York House Watergate to be isolated. "Of Alley" is a part of the name "George Villiers Duke of Buckingham" for example and there is also George Street, Villiers street and Duke Street.
York House Watergate was a part of a grand estate belonging to the Duke of Buckingham who was said to be the lover of King James and fictionalized by Alexandre Dumas in The Three Musketeers.
Joseph Bazalgette was assigned the task of narrowing the River Thames after the smells got so bad from the effluence that Parliament was disrupted.
The lovely thing about the street names is that you can still see a road which was formerly called "Of Alley" which may seem rather strange. This is because all the streets were named after George Villiers Duke "of" Buckingham, although some have now changed.
Find out more about Joseph Bazalgette and York House Watergate by watching Joolz Guides.
