This Irish Soda Bread is a very simple bread to make! It is an enriched dough, made with buttermilk, flour, and butter. The raisins are a yummy addition! It has a tender moist crumb with a crunchy crust 😋 No wonder this is Ireland's favorite bread!!

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup white whole wheat flour
2 1/2 cup ap flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup raisins
4 TBSP unsalted butter cold
1 egg
2 TBSP butter melted

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut out a circular, 10 inch round of parchment paper. Cover the bottom of a 10 inch cast iron skillet and lightly grease with butter. Set aside.

Add both types of flour, baking soda, and salt to a large bowl. Whisk well. Dice cold butter and add to the flour mixture. Coat the butter in the flour. Cut in using a pastry cutter or you can use your fingers to pinch it in. Do this until it resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center.
In a separate bowl, add buttermilk, egg, and honey. Whisk well to combine. Add wet mixture to the well in your flour. Add raisins. Use a wooden spoon to mix it together. Don't overmix.
Heavily flour a hard surface. Lay your ball of dough onto the surface. Coat well in the flour. Pat out to make it a little flat and smooth out the edges. Fold it up on itself by grabbing the edges and folding it like a business envelope. (Refer to the video.) Flip over and shape into a ball. Place your dough in the cast iron skillet and let it rest for 15 minutes.
Bake at 375 degrees for 35-40 minutes. It should be a delicious, golden brown color. Brush melted butter over the bread. Allow to cool. Slice and serve! Store in a sealed ziploc bag for up to 5 days. Enjoy!! Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

We’ve been baking & eating Irish Soda bread for years, even before I immigrated to NY from the Philippines. Your recipe is similar to Chef John’s of Food Wishes.

The reason you don't hear about Irish Soda bread much is because only the smart folks remember it & remember how easy & affo0rdable it is vs Factory breads of any type. I am being cheeky of course LOL I love Irish Soda Bread cause it reminds me of my Grand Parents & I also remember My Grandma serving me stew dried fruits as a dessert vs cookies cakes etc.
My Grandma served in WW2 & I remember the foods from that period & my Grandmas basic cooking practices. I have tried to live as basic in nutrition as possible to avoid all the bad ingredients in foods today & it has served me well because basic means almost in not full nutrition, but its easily accessible & affordable. Don't get me wrong, I do like some rich foods but even basic home cooking can be rich too. With Irish Soda bread, I use a combination of any type of milk, with any type of unsweetened yoghurt with a tsp of raw Apple cider vinegar. I also prefer unfiltered raw honey vs sugar as well. I believe My Grandma was part Irish & was born in England & immigrated to Canada after the war. I Love War time food, the simpler it is the better I like it. Thank You for this recipe, I think I may add some chopped dried Apricots to this mixture in addition to the raisins. I dont have white WW flour so I will substitute that for 1/2 cup oat flour with all purpose flour to compensate, it may make this bread heavier but thats the way I like it anyway lol I was going to add some toasted pecans but will leave that for another time. I am making this to go with a meatball stew. Thanks again & Greetings From Canada :) Oh Before I forget, I am making this in an enameled cast Iron Dutch oven lined with unbuttered Parchment paper with the lid ON because it allows me to avoid excess fats & it helps retain the moisture & rises better too & stays this way longer than baked in the open oven air which tends to dry out this bread much faster.

Hi, I love making Quick Breads....they are so easy! I haven’t made the Irish Soda Bread with honey before. I used a friends recipe last year that contained caraway seeds and they were just too much! I won’t make it again.I’ve also never baked it in a cast-iron skillet before so this is a first for me! It looks delicious and I’m definitely going to give it a try. Thanks for sharing and happy St. Patrick’s Day! Hugs, Dolores ❤️🍀🍀❤️🍀 PS....Would love for you to put the recipe in the description box in the future. I try to do that on my channel and I know people appreciate it. Just saying…

As an Irish person I’m fully aware there is many interesting recipes and variations on soda bread. However looking at your List ingredients you left out the honey and the buttermilk. And just part of the cultural significance it is not an X on the soda bread it is the blessing it represents the cross.

Looks delicious. But sorry I wouldn’t eat the bread you make with the cat near the table. Yes I like cats. But they shed and no DO NOT BELONG IN THE KITCHEN
