How to Cut Best SFIC Keys on a Framon 2 Key Machine

NOTE re: "narrow side of vise" starting at 8:10 - I found after making this viedo that leaving the "wide" (normal) side of the BOTTOM of the vise in place and only rotating the TOP side to "narrow" worked better (and no, did not have any danger of the wheel cutting into the vise). When I rotated both the top and bottom, as suggested in the video, I found that on deep cuts the key would start to come out of the vise and tilt downward. This contradicts what I said in the video but it was such a long video I couldn't bear to go back and re-record the whole thing.

I know the camera angle and my arm didn't show the insertion of the spacing clip between the vise jaws and I'm sorry about that but I don't really have a rotating camera arm or professional setup, or the time to really get into video editing, but hopefully my explanation and demonstration with my hands was enough to get the idea across.

Nice Video! Thanks! I have the sfic vice and wheel. Current challenge is certain keyways. K and lesser extent M the key blades tilt at an angle in the vice. Just now experimenting with “shimming” the back with a 2.5mm Allen wrench. Having the sfic vice does solve a couple of the problems you ran into. Also Have a HPC punch which i plan to make my primary sfic cutter. It currently has a drifting problem on the depths. Need to have a call with the techs to figure out what I am doing wrong. In videos I see them holding the spacing wheel when cutting, but any attempts to do that with the depth doesn’t stop it from dropping several thousand. Of course it is never consistent so can’t adjust for it.

I haven't tried to use my Framon 2 to cut any Best keys (have a Best punch right next to it), but I have thought about it to check accuracy and to help calibrate the punch. What I don't understand is why they tell you to use the narrow side. Does it change the depth of cut or something? There's no risk of the cutter accidentally hitting the vise, and you get less grip on the key blank.
