SCALA!!! Or, the Incredibly Strange Rise and Fall of the World’s Wildest Cinema and How It Influenced a Mixed-up Generation of Weirdos and Misfits.

In Britain’s post-punk Thatcher years, the infamous and legendary Scala cinema showed a diverse range of films, from high art to cult classics, sexploitation, horror, Kung-Fu and LGBTQIA+. Nudging boundaries of convention, it became an inspiration for future famous creatives. With interviews from nearly 50 contributors, previously unseen archive footage and film clips, Scala!!! is an anarchic, uproarious documentary telling the riotous inside story of the cinema, with an original soundtrack by celebrated musician Barry Adamson.

I went to the Scala many times when I was student in London in the early eighties. A fantastic place for an outsider to get to know some friendly weirdos.

Saturday nighters were a gas! 'Head', 'The Trip', '10, 000 Motels', 'Yellow Submarine', 'Barbarella', etc... etc...

So many memories, I loved the Scala all-nighters!

Those Saturday themed all-nighters were awesome. Never managed to stay awake for the whole night but I always felt safe there. Stumbling out into the streets the next morning was a different experience, it felt like the rest of the world was strange.

I went to see the bands Lights In A Fat City and Nodens Ictus at an all-night film session at the Scala in 1989.. a rarity at the time organised by Club Dog...
.. they don’t make 'em like that anymore...

Loved this cinema ! The edgy, trashy, wonderful films shown, the rumble of the tube trains underneath. It was very much part of the 80's scene in London . I just wish I had kept the monthly film programme listings which were posted to me as they were an artwork in their own right. Halcyon days .
