Asking Friends to Play | Autism Learning Lessons
Показать описание
In this video lesson, Xavier learns how to ask friends to play:
Step 1) Say the friend's name or gently tap their shoulder (if appropriate) to get their attention;
Step 2) Give them space and wait for their attention;
Step 3) Use the sample language given in this video to ask friends to play.
-------------------
As babies become children, their needs shift from more physical and mom/dad focused toward social skills and social development with peers. This same social adjustment happens for many neurodiverse children, which means that kids with autism need to learn how to ask friends to play.
Xavier loves his friends, but he sometimes lacks the appropriate words and body language to engage them in play. The difference between Xavier and his peers in social situation only becomes more stark as he gets older. Use these steps to help learn how to appropriately ask friends to play.
************
Note that not all people like their bodies to be physically touched, so a tap on the shoulder may not be appropriate for all.

Social Academy Kids™ videos are made by Xavier's real life mom to reinforce the lessons he needed to master at school and at home.
In Social Academy Kids™ video lessons, Xavier and his teacher Ms. K address issues of communication, behavior and sensory challenges commonly faced by kids with autism in a fun and entertaining format. Social Academy Kids™ videos never seek to change who the child is, but seek to help viewers improve their ability to engage with their everyday environments in a world that's not always designed for them.
And why should people with developmental disabilities always be expected to adapt to their environments?! Social Academy Kids™ also teaches so-called “neurotypicals” how to anticipate and interact with their autistic friends.
And since developmental delays and autism are not always readily identified in countries around the world, Social Academy Kids™ offers a glimpse into strategies for interaction with friends on the autism spectrum in hopes of spreading knowledge, communication techniques and understanding.
