Experienced this at -55F while stationed at Eielson AFB near Fairbanks. That's a cold you can't imagine. Privileged to fly the A-10 and F-16 in this life changing environment.

I need to make this state part of my life! Snow and dim lighting (always flattering) are two of my favorite things! Thank you for helping me be more excited about beauty today. This was marvelous!

This is really good. When you have never experienced it, it's hard to imagine.

This is currently featured on the weather channels website for their article on the winter Solstice.
Congratulations! You've made it to the big time!

Spent thirteen years at UAF, seven with an office in Arctic Health. I recognize that view. Thanks!

Now for a june solstice version, the camera would have to follow the "motion of the sun". In that whole month plus July the sun goes across almost the entire sky, dips below the horizon, and gives those Alaska residents civil twilight for only 3 or 4 hours.

I used to live in Fairbanks years ago and remember looking at the sun this time of year. My question was, "is the sun rising or setting?" This time of year, the fact that it is there at all is the highlight of the day...or night...or, well, you know what I mean :)

The winter solstice near the arctic circle is always best viewed from a south facing coastline as there is not much obstruction. Other decent vantage points include from height overlooking flat southernly terrain. I have had the privilege of seeing this in Finland near Tornio. It is a bit further north than Fairbanks at 63N, the sun rises but hugs the horizon for about an hour and a half before setting.

The beauty hides the fact that it was -40 that day...

In Fairbanks, the sun reaches a sky altitude of 2 degrees on the week of December 21st to contrast just outside the Antarctic Circle where, at the equivalent latitude, the sun reaches 49 degrees at solar noon-time.

Using my iPhone camera I recorded this video using the time-lapse feature to make it go even faster. LOL!

The sun basically never rises during winter time in Alaska. Pretty but pretty cold also.

There is at least a Sun in the sky in Fairbanks. The Sun doesn't even rise in Barrow/Utqiagvik, Alaska

I live on the beach in Southern California and our winter average is 60F and our summer average is 70F so not much variation here. That looks miserable.

Nono, it doesn't hide it at all. First thing I thought was "oooh pretty!", next thing was "feck, that looks cold out there!" O.o
