One thing I learned after reviving a 671 that had sat for maybe 2 years, racks almost always seize after a certain amount of time. If you plan to revive one, the first thing you do is free the rack.

Quick little tip before starting diesels, locate and ensure the fuel cutoff moves. It may not work but at least you know where it is and hopefully it works, if needed. Grab it and slam it back(usually)

There used to be a lot of those 70 series Chevy's on the road. When I was a kid, the city garbage trucks were like that, Detroit powered with automatics. I can't still hear the supercharger whine

You're a brave guy to put your face on a runaway engine. Maybe if you put it into gear it could stop it too?

I hated those POS two-stroke Detroit. I used to drive a 1978 White Road Boss that had one. Leaked like a stabbing victim (they all do), loud, and gutless. They would also reverse themselves sometimes and you would see smoke coming from the airbox and air being sucked thru the exhaust.
