Nadine Dorries: Calls for Standards Investigation

With more media focus on the absent MP, Nadine Dorries, there are now calls for an investigation on the basis that she is damaging the reputation of parliament. This seems reasonable to me, but I have to ask why we haven't had this sort of attention with other MPs who don't do their jobs.

If this behaviour was conducted by a Labour MP, the Daily Mail would be calling them a scrounger and demanding their resignation on its front page everyday until it happened

She is a competent scrounger but an incompetent minister.

Local Councillors get chucked out for 6 months non-attendance, and that's not even a full-time job, Surely MPs should be held to higher standards, not lower ones?

Tories and their friends in the press get... awkward about Tory MPs being called scroungers, lazy or entitled. Because if you admit one of them fits that category, where do you stop?

Time for taking the register every day - and publishing it. Act like children, get treated like children.

It makes you think perhaps MP`s should have a minimum service level imposed on them

It takes less time to evict ppl form their homes than a lazy MP

Might help to record their attendance in parliament and at surgeries and make this information easily publically accessible.

It's difficult to find out what actual responsibilities MPs have. They don't seem to be obliged to find out what their constituents think and represent that to Parliament, because we have a 'representative democracy'. There's no obligation to attend the House. They don't have to meet with their constituents in a surgery and probably don't bother if they're in a safe seat. There's not even a requirement to be sober. We need an OFSTED for MPs.

Just another symptom of Sunak's lack of backbone that he is putting up with this.

She's claiming thousands of pounds per year for her two daughters, whom she claims for office duties?

One thing is for sure, Brexit has really turned the spotlight on the UK's MPs and the way they operate - maybe this is the benefit Brexiteers were looking for - nah, probably not, Brexit was about getting rid of the EU's MPs because they were supposedly so bad - who knew we had worse at home...

I have questions. If the local communities of these MPs are generally aware of their lack of representation, why the hell do they keep voting them in?

Are members of the House of Lords still allowed to clock in and go home and still get their attendance fee?
As usual, the phrase 'Workshy, skiving parasites' only applies to Benefits claimants, and the sick and disabled are still forced to attend DWP assessments to determine if their lost limbs have grown back or their heart condition has spontaneously healed itself. As for the idea that Dorries is 'Bringing Parliament into disrepute', well the jokes write themselves, don't they?

"Nine weeks have now passed and you have not resigned, " said Shefford Town Council in a letter, which it has also published on X (formerly Twitter).

The council also raised questions about Ms Dorries's commitment to her role as MP, as she has not spoken in the Commons since July 2022 and last voted in April.

In Norway you can only stand in an election in the constituency you live in. I always thought that was the case in all democratic and quasidemocratic countries and was surprised to learn it's different in the UK.

She's resigning because she's been refused a seat in the House of Lords; but surely her attendance in the House of Commons is a preview to the likelyhood of her attendance in the House of Lords.

Any normal person, actually working in a job, would have been sacked long ago. This is ridiculous.
