My attorney took 40 percent. I did nothing. The firm did it ALL. They won the full amount my policy allowed. I’m so grateful.

People really need to understand that when you're fighting for financial compensation you need someone who's invested in getting that money just as much as you are.

I have $250K under my bed. I call it “60% of my house”.

100% of nothing is still nothing. Get a good lawyer, take your 60% of the settlement/award and be happy about it.

Thanks for explaining that. My late fiance was a lawyer, and folks just did not understand this.

A lot of people don’t know the different types of fees and how expensive cases are from the lawyer side. Hourly fees are often high, but a lot of lawyers (like Mike is describing) mostly use contingency fees, meaning they only make money if your case settles or wins.

Pretty much everything your lawyer has to file in court also costs money just to file (complaint, subpoenas, motions, etc) that a contingency lawyer is HOPING to recuperate by trying to win the case, both for you and their own livelihood.

People may not like lawyers. And sometimes thats fair.
But often you NEED them. And when that time comes, you should get the best your wallet or case allows.

If you've been in a serious car accident like I have, you know that personal injury lawyers are angels walking amongst mortals

The real problem is that lawyers shouldn't have to work that long or cost that much to bring justice. If my employer breaks the law, I shouldn't have to pay tens of thousands of dollars or wait several years to get him to stop.

Lawyers are a form of law enforcement, and law enforcement in the US is rigged against poor people. It's not the lawyers' fault, it's the system.

Some people call it greed but I call it compensation.

It's the in every profession. People want the work, they want excellent top-of-the-line work but they want to pay bargain basement prices.

The difference in a greedy lawyer and one that’s not. I was in a wreck in Alabama and we are from Tennessee. Our lawyer didn’t tell us he had to be licensed in Alabama if we had to go to court. Long story short. He wanted us to settle for 20, 000 and by the time he took his cut, paid back the insurance co. and everything else we owed we would have walked away with 6000 dollars. I was out of work for 6 months and it didn’t seem fair to me so we hired another lawyer.

Greed isn’t the only motivator.
I know a lawfirm that took one third from a grandma taking in hernhandicapped grandkids from a bad situation who was seriously damaged in an accident. Then the lawyer runs off to Belieze to avoid extradition. Then the same lawfirm refuses to release her from the contract despute failing on their end and demanding ANOTHER 1/3.

NO. I DON'T WANT A GREEDY LAWYER. I WANT A GOOD ONE.

Generally personal injury lawyers take 1/3 or 33.333%. I had an $850, 000 settlement some years ago after nearly dying being hit by a semi and I got $502, 727.55 or something like that. Took 3.5 years. Seems completely fair to me.

My Social Security attorney in Lexington changed 25% of my SSDI settlement. She worked for it, too. Dealing with the SSA is an arduous task.

People don’t just not like lawyers because they think they would take part of their settlement. They don’t like lawyers because they don’t see the litigation process as fair. Now occasionally their right and occasionally they are wrong, but at the end of the day, public good is secondary to much of the law

Its a thin line between just compensation for cases worth $100, 000s versus the blatant absurdity of anyone being paid a wage so high they earn $60k in a month...

The bullshit part is taking your cut first, then taking out expenses.

I mean, if I want the money then I would want the person representing me to want that money too. Having a shared objective (i.e. extracting as much money as possible from the other party) is a win-win situation for everyone involved, no?

people hate lawyers because they are slippery like a fish.
