“Above and Beyond” (2013) is a tribute to the band’s late keyboardist, Jon Lord, a founding member of Deep Purple.

Upon learning of Lord’s passing, lead vocalist Ian Gillan penned the lyric honoring his mate. He explained : “After a period of quiet reflection, we shared some old familiar anecdotes about Jon and before long his spirit filled the room. I scribbled the line ‘Souls, having touched, are forever entwined.’ And then he sang these words to us all.” 💜🎼💜

I love this song. It's one of their best and stands up there with any song from Machine Head. Everyone is spot on here, as in their other songs, but this has a nice classical feel to it.

Besides this being a great piece and tribute, it showcases the skills of keyboardist Don Airey. Of course, everyone is great here. I saw DP in the Northeast US in the fall of 2019, before Covid hit our shores. They were amazing. Steve Morse, Don Airey, Roger, Ian and Ian, all great, virtuosos at their instrument. I'm a keyboard player and I'm very picky when it comes to keys players. Keith Emerson was my favorite, but Jon Lord was also brilliant, as is Don Airey. Don is super on keys.

Love this track and the tribute to the great man. There's a real restrained and refined power and majesty about it - rather like Mr Lord himself. Don's keyboards are just perfect and they blend with the guitar brilliantly, just like Jon's used to.

Masterpiece, I love the Irish-Ballad-Touch of the melody, Ians vocals in the deeper regions and these prog parts remind me a little of early Genesis.
