The Cyprus Papers Undercover | Al Jazeera Investigations

Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit exposes how a convicted criminal might obtain a European passport in Cyprus - for the right price. Undercover reporters reveal a two-track citizenship by investment scheme, where “problematic” applicants pay more money. The investigation leads to the highest offices of the Cypriot state, where we are given the blueprint on how to bypass the rules.
When confronted with evidence, all involved denied wrongdoing. They claimed that they had suspicions of the undercover team, that they supported and made a report against the journalists to the Cyprus’ anti-money laundering unit.

I lived in Cyprus for 17 years since I was a child and both I and my family were denied to be given citizenship on the basis of naturalisation. Yet the government is giving passports to criminals, I managed to get mine after so much effort and back and forth my family still doesn’t have a passport to the point that they had to come the UK and settle as stateless. My brother was born and raised in Cyprus and he doesn’t have a passport. A young 18 year old committed suicide 2 years ago because he was denied his citizenship so he couldn’t go to study abroad, he was a very Bright student and he was denied his basic right of education outside of Cyprus! Meanwhile this criminal Cypriot government is handing out passports with pay! Thank you Aljezzera for your work on this piece feels like justice will be finally served.

As a Cypriot, I want to thank you from my heart all of you brave jourlnalists who had the courage and creativity to expose these sub-human creatures that only care for their personal agendas while ignoring the prosperity of their own homeland.
Please do such things for Cyprus and other countries as well. Thank you for sharing things we already knew but couldn't prove.

The funny thing everyone seems to forget it all started with a contact or fixer from the UK. How come all these sort of deals starts in London?

As a Cypriot I am ashamed of all these. But it's even more disappointing that nothing will happen to them. The president of the parliament shown in the video has a son, who killed another man due to reckless diving. He was convicted for the minimum time in prison (1 year) but after a couple of months his daddy got him out. Everyone knows and nobody does anything. We gave half of our island to the Turks and whatever is left is ruined by all these corrupted politicians.

This is 100% true. Just take a look at all the new empty homes all over the countryside, bought by foreigners.

Could we stop for a while and appreciate how our reporters took on this high a risk, just to tell us what really is going on behind the scenes?
This just journalism in its purest form, just facts, no makeups and such.

Al Jazeera should also do an investigative report on the corrupt political leaders living in England on political asylum. France is also a heaven for the money laundering darlings. Switzerland another heaven on earth for black money. EU center of culture, development and history. 🤔🤫

“This is Cyprus! Hahaha” what kind of disturbed human hurts his own land and people and laughs about it? He ain’t better than someone who beats someone up and walks away joking about it.

How did you get all those shots of the car from various angles (including the aerial shots) and cover the number plates (at 20:25) without the driver (the manager) knowing that he is being filmed?
