That's an awesome easy setup. I dusted off my old PS2 slim recently, after finding a copy of FF XII for a very reasonable price at thrift store. I had never played the game before, and it made me come to the realization that back in the heyday, the only games I spent my time on were the Tony Hawk's and GTA's. There's a shitload of games I've never given myself a chance to try. With something like this, I can open a whole new realm of gaming without having to resort to eating ramen for a month. Great video.

Yeah it’s cheap and easy except that I accidentally formatted my pc hard rive instead of my ps2 hdd, but totally worth it for silent hill

That's a smoker's PS2. Smoking/vaping around electronics leaves them absolutely disgusting. A good visual representation of what it's doing to you lungs.
Not a smoker, my mom was a nurse for an ear nose and throat doctor for years

My 23yo fatbody PS2 is still kicking. Don't need no mods. 💪

The PS2 has quite a few options for upgrading.

- I would recommend getting the SATA mod for the Network adapter. Maybe you have an IDE drive but man those things are old. That is a time bomb waiting to happen. Maybe an old enterprise IDE drive with little uptime would be a good option but the SATA board replacement allows you to use modern drives. While the PS2 cannot utilize SATA 3 speeds an SSD still has next to zero seek time. You can also just use a SATA HDD.

- Grimdoomer has a fork of OPL which allows you to use drives beyond 2TB in size. You can also format the drives as exfat. Personally I would prefer ext4 but no support for Linux formats at this time.

- With the network adapter or a PS2 slim you can use the ethernet port. If you have an SMB share on your home network you can set it up with OPL and have all your PS2 ISO’s accessible over the network. I personally have found less compatibility issues with my games running via SMB on my slim compared to the SSD in my fat PS2.

- Using a Dualsense, Xbox, Dualshock 4, Joycons, or any controller besides the Dualshock 2/Retrofighters may sound appealing but keep in mind that only the DS2 and Retrofighters controllers have pressure sensitive face buttons. In most cases this won’t matter but for Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid it will.

- using OPL will prevent you from playing PS1 games. There is a PS1 emulator called Popstarter or something like that but it isn’t the same as the hardware-based backwards compatibility of any pre-9000X PS2. The PS1 hardware basically makes the peripherals work when they aren’t being used for playing PS1 CDs. This includes the network, internal drive, and USB ports.

- worth mentioning that the hardware of the PS2 has a lifespan. The most likely thing to go first is the disc drive. This can be replaced if parts are still available. The capacitors in the power supply are probably going to start dying within the next few years if they haven’t already been. These can be replaced if compatible capacitors are available. Though this will require soldering and desoldering.

I have also been upgrading PS2s and still love the console. It has a great game library and was a big part of my childhood. Having said this do note that software emulation is pretty good for the PS2. PCSX2 is wonderful. Some games, at time of writing, just do not emulate well. Raw Danger is one of them. But if you are interested in modding your PS2 console I would suggest you also pay attention to software emulators as they will, eventually, be the only way to play our favourite PS2 games baring an FPGA coming around.

OPL use OPL. HDloader is obsolete. OPL can force progressive scan in some game, force HD res on some games, use cheats, load games from the network (SMB), Load your popstarter PS1 Games, use Virtual Memory cards, use ps3 and ps4 controllers wired or wireless using a generic USB BT adapter, load games from the memory card with a moded MC with a SD card soldered to it. is the ultimate ps2 application.

PS2 don't work well with HDTVs. Save yourself $300 and get a mids 2000 analog TV. Those TV's will match the ps2 480 output signal and will get you a really nice and clean image. I just bought a 05 Sanyo for 15 dollars from my local thrift store. Best decision ever. I can't believe how good and smooth it looks

I was legit looking for a wireless PS2 controller, now I have an option to use a PS5 controller. That is amazing! 🤩
The Retrotink 5X is an amazing system so glad I got it for my N64, XBOX, and PS/PS2 🔥🔥🔥
Now that people have tested the fan for a while I feel confident that this is the way 🥳🥳🥳

There a version of Free McBoot that can play PS2 disc images off an SD card connected to a simple adapter in the other memory card slot. It's a faster connection than the USB ports, as fast or faster than the CD drive. But this only works with a genuine Sony MagicGate or 100% MagicGate compatible memory card.

With OPL you can use a cheap USB BT dongle and just pair any BT controller

The PS2 already has an HDMi cable. It doesn't need a mod because the PS2 already outputs components and RGB Scart signals. So, if you don't want to buy a box, you can just use the HDMI RAD2X for the PS2 or the Hyperkin PS2 HDMi cable. No mods are needed.

A good quality component cable, like HD Retrovision's PS2/PS3 component cable, costs about $50 and makes the picture on an HD TV excellent.

BRUH, HDLoader is outdated! OPL ("Open PS2 Loader") outperforms it I any way and is STILL constantly being updated! The last version is 5 days old...!

For the love of god please use component cables into the tink 5x so much better picture quality than composite. 🌈

large sata drives are cheap now. they load games faster on OPL. this also translates to noticeably less button lag.

If you want to be extra nerdy, Brook makes a controller adapter that pairs with the dualshock 3.
