1. Don't just chase past returns while selecting a fund. Always look at the upside/downside capture ratio, rolling returns and investing style.
2. Avoid investing in only sectoral funds. Instead opt for well diversified funds.
3. Don't invest in too many funds.
4. Do not have unrealistic expectations on returns
5. Remain invested at all times

One of the things which most people don't/won't do is going through the framework of a specific fund house which is clearly mentioned in the first few pages of the fact sheet available on MF house website. This is primarily very helpful in deciding which fund to choose based on major market trends and conditions and also gives an idea about how the returns will progress or grow as sectoral shift happens. Also going through the fact sheet can give a very interesting perspective in choosing two funds within the same category with a completely different philosophy... a great way to diversify.

I have a doubt. Someone correct me if I am wrong. All i am hearing is invest in stock market for long time and the returns are guaranteed. No one talks about what if India becomes an economy like Japan or China now. Their markets are falling/lagging. I think even if you invested for more than 20 years, returns are not guarnteed.

Is it fine to have 2 funds per sector.. like 2 for Large 2 for Mid 2 for small and a momentum

It seems its best to rely on index funds for largecap and midcap. And select basket of 3-4 funds for small cap. Because best performing smallcap funds enter into midcap space which render index investing useless for smallcap.
My view.
Please make a video on portfolio allocation among large, mid and smallcap.
